Trying to Get Pregnant

I'm not one to post dumb questions...

...but I sure as heck Google them.  My search history now shows "Ziplining when pregnant?"  Just in case I get a BFP this cycle and am pregnant when we take our vacation next month.  I just found out there's a new 2 hour zipline tour of Hilton Head.

Pretty sure the answer is a definitive "WTF no," but I had to search.  Since I've already broken my rule and posted my stupid question, what do you ladies think?  Would you zipline/kayak/parasail/etc. when 6 weeks pregnant?  I've never done any of the above, so I have no idea what could go wrong or whether it causes stress on the body.

Married to my best friend 6/5/10
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.

Re: I'm not one to post dumb questions...

  • Yes to all of the above. It causes no more stress on your body than any other kind of workout.

Think about it this way - if it was seriously dangerous and people were getting hurt all the time, clearly the cost of the lawsuits would cause the tour to shut down.

ETA: After 4-5 months, I'd say no, but at six weeks the baby is still behind your pelvic bone. Even if you fall on your stomach, nothing is going to happen to the baby.

I just read on a zipline company website that women in their first trimester are welcome to zipline with their doctor's approval, although women later in pregnancy aren't allowed to participate.  I guess the activity isn't very jolting?

I'm laughing at myself because I'm not typically the nervous type, but I'm worried about something that could potentially be a problem if I just so happen to get pregnant before the trip.  I guess the miscarriage messed with my head more than I thought.

Don't worry about it, I've been obsessing about whether or not I'll get to take my tennis lessons I take every summer if I get KU soon.  Obviously baby trumps tennis, but I love them and have been looking forward to them all year.

When I think about the pros, sweating and running and possibly falling during the course of a 2-3 hour match, no I wouldn't do that even if one day pregnant.  But the reason it is ridiculous that I am freaking out over it is because my tennis lessons are like....stand in line, hit the ball, shuffle to the other side of the court, hit the ball again and then get back in line.  Occasionally we'll put more effort into it, but I'm sure it would be fine to play for most of first tri anyway, but since the miscarriage I think I'll be afraid to sneeze when I get KU again.

  • I'm training for a half marathon and plan to continue if I get KU (with doctor's permission). So yeah, I'd do pretty much any of the activities you've listed.

  • I would if I was that early in my pregnancy. Heck, I competed on horseback until I was 11 weeks and then still rode off & on casually until I was about 25 weeks.

Good point!  We're also riding horses on our vacation, but I didn't even think of that as a concern.  I know several equestrians who rode and competed early in pregnancy.  I may be rusty, but I certainly hope I can stay seated on a trail ride...

This is the stupidest theory I have ever heard. Roller coasters are not seriously dangerous or lawsuit provoking. Would you go on a roller coaster while 6 weeks pregnant?

I went ziplining a few months ago and had to sign a waver that I was not pregnant.

My experiences with ziplining have made it seem quite tame. You really just sit there and enjoy the ride. On some of them you need to pull down on the cable to slow yourself down, but I certainly wouldn't categorize it as physical activity. If you're not holding it correctly you can start to spin, and at the end of the line you are jerked to a stop, but it's really not a big deal at all. I've been on bus rides that have been rougher on my body than ziplining.

So yes, I would absolutely go ziplining when 6 weeks pregnant. Kayaking too, if you're a reasonably active person already. I don't know anything about parasailing, so I couldn't say about that.

    Have fun on your trip!
