Using spray paint

I have two flower pots that I cover with spray paint every year.  This year, they only need a light coat around the rims.  As long as I do this outside, it should be okay, right?  From everything I've read, it sounds like as long as there's ventilation, it's okay.  I hate having to second guess everything lol

Personally, I wouldn't use 'spray' paint because of the fumes, and tiny particles that are airborn.  But I'm paranoid with things like that because I know how easily it can get into your lungs.
But I wouldn't think twice about using a paint brush outside though.  Or ask your hubby to do it for you, if only a light coat is needed it should be quick and easy for him.

  • Ditto what PP said. My family has forbidden me from painting anything lol, I would ask DH to do it for you.
  • I agree, spray paint gets pretty smelly.  If anything, wear a mask, do it quick, and just walk away and let it be when you are finished.
  • If you wear a mask and do it outside I would personally be ok with it.  Though if your DH could do it, even better!  Why risk it?

Since it is spray paint I would use a mask regardless. So if you do it outside with a mask you should be fine.
  • I am told that it is always best to wear a mask.. but I was also told once that you should wear long sleeves, too.  I don't know if the long sleeves part is just an old wives tale, or if there is any substance to it.. but I thought I would throw it in there.

  • Hmmm, this post has made me second guess my upcoming projects.  I'm a Halloween fanatic and was planning on starting the new sections of faux cemetery fencing I'm adding this year (translation = lots and lots of spray painting).  For a quick flower pot or two I still think it would be fine to spray outdoors with a bandana or something, but for this extended work I'm going to order a respirator-type painters mask.

  • I have a respirator-type mask I use for all spray activities and things like sanding or mixing soil. I would also suggest wearing latex or some other protective gloves to keep the paint from getting on your hands.

Otherwise it probably isn't a big deal just to do a little.

This.. a particle mask is useless against organic fumes.. you need an organic mask for paint fumes. AND be outside or in a well-ventilated area.

Toluene causes birth defects. I wouldn't risk whether or not my overall exposure over time were going to be high enough to do damage during this very formative period.. I'd minimize my exposure.
