Different "age/stages" room at daycare?

This morning when I dropped Lo off at daycare her teacher said that her friend (who is the same age and doing all of the same things) is moving up to the next room. They are both fast crawlers and big talkers pulling up onto everything. I asked why and she said it has to do with age and what they are doing. When I said they are the exact same age she then said eating habbits are involved to.

Now im confused. Lo have never been a great eater she takes about 21-26 oz a day of formula. She was on alimentum but we recently switched to soy and there has been no change in the amount. She is eating table food some and I try to get 3 meals in her but sometime its one and sometimes she will take 2. We also do purees if I didnt cook something that Lo can have.

The other baby is eating tons of table food and is a big eater and im wondering if thats the reason why Lo isnt moving up? Anyone with experience? Im just confused and when I pick her up this afternoon ill ask more questions but for now im feeling weird about it until i know more.

  • The eating would be my guess. Maybe in the next stage they don't hand feed them, just put the food in front of them. So once LO holds own bottle, doesn't need purees she will move up?

She does feed herself and at her daycare they give them handheld pieces to hold and gum.

  • Also keep in mind sometimes they have to move one child, and just pick the one that's most ready.  That would happen in our daycare.  When DD was in the smaller infant room they would have 8 babies, when they got a new baby they would move the oldest or most mobile baby over.

This. I used to work in a daycare and there were a whole host of reasons as to who got moved.

Age was the first factor then after that it went to, eating ability, movement, who was at daycare most/least and quite honestly sometimes temperment. We'd often move the one that just couldn't get along in the current situation and hope they'd do better in the next one!

Our daycare moves based on age and not the other criteria.  They don't move any child to make room for a new one...the new one would go on a wait list until there was room at the daycare.  DS won't move until he turns 1.  Then he'll be in the 1 year old room and won't move again until he turns 2 and so on.

  • our DC moves infants to mobile infants when they're a) on one nap/day b) can sleep on a cot and c) are on sippies/finger foods (plus walking or close)
  • At LO's daycare the rule is when they turn one year old. There are 3 kids in his room that turned one last month, but they didnt have room for all 3 at the next room, so they only moved the one boy that was closer to walking than the other ones. I am not sure how their eating habbits are..just my 2cents..

I worked in DC's for over 10 years - if there's only one slot open in the next room it comes down to who's 'most ready.' I'm sure whenever another slot opens your LO will move up. Sometimes room dynamics came into play - like if one child was showing signs of being restless in the younger room while the other one was doing fine they'll move the restless one. I'm sure it won't be long until your LO follows.
