LO will be 10 mo old on friday.
He's always been a big boy and he loves his formula, but we are having such a hard time with table food...
He has 5 bottles a day and we try to do 3 meals, but it doesnt always work. He seems to love his bottles too much ( I swear Im going to pack his bottles when he goes to college
).
He is on stage 2 and everytime I try to give him stage 3 or little pieces of table food he gaggs and throws up.. He was on reflux meds until a couple months ago, so there is no day he doesnt throw up at least once. I cant take the throw up anymore, it never bothered me much until lately, but its getting so annoying. I am nervous to give him any new table food of fear of throwing up.
Any advice, please.
Re: Concerned about his eating.
DD also has reflux and is on medicine for it. Our pedi recommended skipping stage 3 and going right to finger foods. He recommended puffs first, and once she got the hang of them to move on. She gagged and threw up a lot. She still will occasionally. I read a lot about it and apparently the gag reflux is very forward on the tongue when babies are young it eventually moves back.
Try and relax and just keep doing the finger foods. One day it will work. One day DD was throwing up while eating, the next day I got her to eat and swallow a tiny piece of banana, it was such a victory.
Some babies just need more exposure.
Also, once she got a few finger foods down we stopped the purees. I think it was confusing her, trying to figure out if she should chew or just swallow.
My DS has gone through this, to a lesser extent. You might try mixing stage 2 and 3 to transition her. Also, stage 3 food has some bigger chunks. You could mash those chunks up a little until she gets the hang of it. Keep trying! The routine of it will take hold. Be as consistent with offering it as you can.
I can sympathize--DS is starting children's day out at church in June and needs to be on a sippy cup and finger foods by then. He loves being fed with a spoon. I'm a little stressed trying to get him to that point by the start of the program! It seems like now that he's about to be a year old, we need to accelerate his progress.
Thank you for your thoughts and advice.
I keep trying every night and every night he throws up. I am starting to get concerned about this, because I just dont think its normal that a 10 mo old throws up almost every night. I am writting down everytime he does it, and I will call the doctor and talk, i figured it would help better if I have an excat idea how often he throws up.
Oh and the sippy cup is another story..ugh...His eating/drinking habits are making me so frustrated. He is has been walking since 9 months like a big boy, but eats like a baby..ugh
I would agree that talking to your pedi if concerned is best. At our 9 month appointment, the pedi said most babies can handle finger foods by then, but DD was not out of the realm of "normal" because she wasn't yet.
We are also seeing a GI and had previous discussed feeding issues with him and he said if it continued we would do a feeding and swallowing study. About a week before we saw him DD had figured out soft finger foods (banana, eggs some other fruit). And when we went back to the pedi at 10.5 months DD was eating a ton.
So, I think your doing the right thing by keeping an eye on it. I like to be proactive now and then maybe have to cancel appointments and such later.
Also, I'm a special ed. teacher and worked with preschoolers for a while. I saw so many kids who's parents / drs. just waited too long for things to get back on a normal track and the kids were so behind by the time they were 3. I'd much rather deal with it now and it turn out to be nothing then to wait and the problem is worse.
My husband thinks I am over reacting, and I might be..but I don?t know.
Sometimes I think I expect too much from my little one. He has always been quick with everything, he crawled at 6 months and walked at 9 months..so maybe Im expecting him to be nice and easy about everything.
He has very good motor skills, he can pick even the littlest things with his fingers, it?s the gagging reflex that is messing things up.
Thank you for your thoughts.
Not a problem. One more thing I wanted to mention. You said your LO had reflux. When we saw the pedi GI he talked a lot about how reflux symptoms look different when LO get older. At the time DD was off her reflux meds. He mentioned that refusing solids (she was even refusing purees) and gagging and throwing up could have been from being off reflux meds - we were looking for arching back and trouble with bottle feeding, but he said that changes as they get older. Once we went back on her meds she did much better. This was not something the pedi had mentioned or even seemed to know much about.
