should i use the bathroom after intercourse if i'm trying to get pregnant?

so i have always been told to use the bathroom after intercourse to help so that i didnt get yeast inf. and a uti. so i have but it wasnt until the other day when my husband said do you think that you using the bathroom is causing us not to get pregnant? im like oh i never even thought about that. so here i am we have been trying for 5 months now do u think that may have something to do with it?

My doctor has said that it can be helpful to stay put for even just 5 minutes.  No need to jump out of bed and run to pee.

Yes, the "smart" sperm is quick. However, if your partner's shot wasn't right on target, it can be helpful to let the semen stay in there for a few minutes so you have a better chance at the fast guys finding their way to the opening of your cervix.  Especially if your partner has a lower than average volume of semen.

Honestly, I think the newbie link should be re-written.  Not all of the advice is accurate.

Holding off for a few minutes will not cause a UTI.

This exactly. You don't want the dumb sperm anyway. ;P 

ETA: Sometimes I do wait a few minutes (not too long though) to go do my business. DH and I like to cuddle after anyway.

Maybe for you. If you are prone to them, it most certainly can.

If you aren't prone to UTI's it likely won't hurt, but it isn't going to help. Only times it has been shown to be even remotely helpful is with IUI's, but that is a completely different scenario.

How the hell can his aim be off by the way? It's not like the vagina has multiple channels.

 

And my RE didn't even tell me to lay there after.

As far as urinating to avoid UTI's - the recommendation is to urinate within one hour after intercourse.  So, like others said, you don't have to jump up and urinate immediately.

I usually don't pee until the next morning after sex. Never had a UTI. Not pregnant after a year of trying, either. So, if you're prone to infections, go pee! Clearly holding it in isn't helping me

I agree with everyone else. Using the bathroom after sex is not a problem. I also noticed you don't temp. Since you are going on 5 months with no luck, I would suggest you sign up on Fertility Friend by clicking my chart, or anyone else's chart, and begin temping in the mornings. It is a great tool to help you pinpoint when you ovulate and help you make sure that you have the right timing. Good luck-

I have to agree. If I remember correctly, even TCOYF says it may be helpful to lay down for a few minutes after sex. For the majority of women, staying put for 10 minutes is not going to cause a UTI.
