Healthy Choice microwavable meals?

I've always eaten a turkey sandwich for lunch.  I really mean always. For almost everyday of my adult life.  I know the research/opinions vary on the lunch meat debate but I'm going to stay away from it (for now, we'll see what happens).

Anyway, I'm having a really hard time coming up with lunch alternatives. Today the Healthy Choice microwavable lunches were on sale so I grabbed a bunch. They say no preservatives and are only 250 calories a meal. But, it says 500 mg sodium a meal.  Is that a lot? In general, as these meals healthy? I know lots of microwavable meals are loaded with preservatives.

Re: Healthy Choice microwavable meals?

  • I have been eating tons of the frozen meal from Amy's Organic kitchen. My super healthy living sister lived on frozen meals when she was in graduate school. I say, it's better than fast food and honestly, any food at this point is helpful.

  • I am at the point where I'll eat whatever will settle well with me. One minute I'm starving and the next nauseous as heck. I've been taking those meals to school with me for the last 3 weeks. Sometimes I can eat them, sometimes not, lol.

  • I have been going with Amy's as well. Kashi is another good choice- they may be more calories (which you need anyway) but they are also organic and you can feel a little safer that you are eating healthy.
  • The microwaveable meals tend to have a ton of salt and other stuff. I don't necessarily think its BAD but its probably not the most healthy thing to eat for lunch.

I really like the Kashi ones.  I don't eat them often anymore since my LO eats real food and we try to give her what we're eating. (and I don't feel comfortable feeding her those).   I'm not sure how much better those are than the Lean Cuisines and Healthy Choice meals, but I feel like the ingredients taste a little fresher at least.

If you love your turkey sandwiches you could roast a small turkey and cut it up for sandwiches for a few days instead of using deli meat.   MH and I do this a lot and it's pretty yummy!

I am in the same boat. I would pick up a deli meat and cheese every week for lunch and I have found myself struggling to find alternatives. I normally have left oversea from dinner, but they do always look appetizing for lunch.

There's always leftovers from dinner the night before and PB&Js, but I agree, lunch if hard, even if you're letting yourself eat lunch meat. If you're really addicted to that turkey sandwich, you could always heat it to steaming the night before to kill off any bacteria and then toss it in the refrigerator so it'll be ready for lunch the next day.
