Preference for characters (ie: Disney, etc.)

Do your LOs have preferences for any characters like Mickey, Winnie the Pooh, Elmo, Dora, etc?  Have they been exposed to them at all?  Nikolai wouldn't know Mickey Mouse (or any other character for that matter) from a hole in the ground - we don't watch any DVDs or shows like that or anything and he doesn't have any character themed toys.  Just wondering if I am inadvertently denying him something he would really enjoy.

Re: Preference for characters (ie: Disney, etc.)

  • We took LO to Disney last month (my cousin was getting married in Orlando so we figured why not?!) and she had, and still has, no idea who the characters were/are. She knows certain tv shows (the theme song for Big Bang, the wheel noise on Wheel of Fortune) but doesn't watch any tv except for Sesame Street. She is obsessed with Elmo. She will squeal and clap, it's pretty ridiculous. Other than the SS characters (particularly Elmo), she doesn't know any.

  • I don't think he has a preference. I love Disney world etc but he hasn't been exposed to it much yet. He Does have a preference for certain types of toys, he loves any kind of toy car.

  • yep...I'm one of the bad moms that has exposed her child to tv.  Stella loves Mickey.  Mommy and Daddy love Spongebob and I'm sure it won't be long before she learns to roll her eyes at us.

  • Sylvia doesn't watch TV or have any character clothes/toys yet (I'm not against it eventually, just hasn't seemed necessary yet), but the other day we were at the store and she flipped over a picture of Big Bird, Elmo, and Grover. It was so funny! She kept reaching for it and making me take her to where she could see it.

MH or my sister may have had Sesame Street on once or twice in the background, but Sylvia doesn't sit and watch it, so I don't think she'd recognize them. It did make me think that maybe she'd like to watch it, though, ha ha!

  • We have some Sesame Street books, and LO loves Elmo... but I really ham up his voice when I do him, so that could be part of it. :)  But I ham up all of the characters, and she always giggles most for Elmo.  I think it's hilarious that someday she'll see Sesame Street on tv and be like, "Cool, it's the characters from my books!" instead of vice versa!

She loves Elmo.  Has since the first time she saw him in a you tube video. I think his red fur and his voice are like baby/toddler crack.

  • A has been to Disney but doesn't know any characters. The only one she seems to be drawn to is Elmo. We play a lot of You tube clips of Elmo songs on the iPad for her and she loves it. We have a few books with Elmo too and she seems to gravitate towards those.

  • Reed loses his mind over Barney! Kind of bummed that he loves such an annoying show, but it's pretty adorable to see him get so excited when it comes on. He also seems to really enjoy Elmo.
  • We let DD watch a little TV.  She really likes Super WHYY and Yo Gabba Gabba.  She usually watches one episode of TV per day (sometimes not).   She enjoys the singing and it gives mommy a break to get something done.
  • DS loves the theme song for The Backyardigans, but not sure he'd recognize any of them if we turned it on mid-episode.  Same thing for Bubble Guppies.  We have some Pooh toys, but I don't think he has any clue that his book "matches" his Classic Pooh rattle or the shape sorter, etc.

  • she hasn't seen anything enough to recognize anyone.

DH has put on Mickey Mouse clubhouse for her a few times.

  • Max loves Elmo, Big Bird & Cookie Monster.  He had an Elmo doll that came with a book that he's loved since he was teeny and then my mom & dad bought the other 2 for him.  Whenever we see something that has Elmo, he gets really excited and it's so cute.
  • No TV here, so I don't think there are any characters she recognizes or anything. Except maybe Sophie. ;)

  • I've put on pokoyo (sp?) for LO a couple of times, and he does seem to get more excited when the pink elephant is on screen.

  • The only thing LO watches is Little Einsteins on demand... I like it as well. I tried Mickey Mouse Clubhouse today and I wanted to poke my eye out...

Also  Sunidaze - watch out with Spongebob and babies/toddlers... I went back and googled this article I read last year, which argues that Spongebob may negatively effect executive function skills of toddlers ... (obv. take this with a grain of salt - but I thought I would share)

  • He loves Tigger.  Not sure if it is because of the bright color but he focuses on that.  He watched some of Cars but other than that he has not really been exposed to much.
  • Sam has no idea... I guess I haven't ever shown him any disney characters.

He locked eyes and fell in love with a stuffed cat of my nieces though. (It's one of those really funny ones that have the oversized eyes)

Same here.  We've never turned on anything specifically for her.  All she has (inadvertently) seen is the local news when we have it on.  haha.

  • If C does watch tv, it's the Baby tv channel, so no recognizable characters. However, he loves Elmo!  My mom got him a little Elmo beanie doll and he has several Elmo books. Loves them!  His Elmo books are among the books he'll bring you over and over. I read "Ding Dong Elmo" and "So Big" multiple times a day.

This. She also has a little lamb stuffed animal that she knows as "Lamby" and will go find and kiss it if you ask, "Where's Lamby?"

  • We don't have him watch kids TV (no flames at all, the TV is on PLENTY), so I don't think he recognizes anyone.

BUT for Christmas, my husband bought my son a full sized Buzz Light Year and Woody from the Disney store, which I thought was ridiculous, since he is so young and he can't really play with them yet. But ... when MH brings them out, LO freaks his sh!t. He LOVES them. He thinks it's hilarious when they "talk." Go figure!

  • We don't have cable, so she's never seen any TV shows here at home and has not been exposed to any of the characters for children yet. My dad always tries to show her TV when we go visit him and she's never shown any interest while there. She has both a Mickey and Minnie Mouse stuffed animals that were gifts, but she doesn't seem to care one way or another about them yet. Her favorite stuffed toy is just a random pink owl that a friend gave her. She loves that thing!

I've been thinking about taking her to Disney World before we move from FL (it's just an hour away from us right now), but I'm not sure that she's old enough to enjoy it yet.

  • She loses interest in the actual show but LOVES the theme song to Mickey Mouse Club house and also the hot dog song at the end (everything in between she ignores lol).  She also has a stuffed Mickey and if I says "where's Mickey Mouse" she's grab him....she also grabs him when the show comes on and she holds his hands and sort of makes him dance...it's too frikkin adorable!

  • I don't put on any tv for Maya, so she hasn't been exposed to any characters.  DH puts Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on for her when I'm at the gym and swears she loves it and reaches for the screen.  But when he tried to show me, she wasn't interested in the tv at all.  She just wanted to climb all over me, lol.

She has shown more interest in her stuffed animals (generic animals, not characters) and kisses them a lot now- so cute!

  • We have a stuffed Clifford from Kohls that J loves these days. He's been equally infatuated with other items though, Clifford is just his "flavor of the month" it seems =P
