Feeding kids/getting them to eat healthy is one of the most challenging parts of parenthood, in my opinion. How do you feel about how your kids eat? [Poll]
"Watching [younger DS] consume Chinese mixed veggies (carrots, broccoli, bamboo shoots, cabbage, water chestnuts, 3 kinds of mushrooms, snow peas, tofu) with a zeal [older DD] reserves for chicken nuggets and pizza is all the proof I need that picky eaters are born and not made."
My dd will eat broccoli and fruit. So I don't let myself get too crazy about her diet even though it isn't as diverse as I'd like.
DD is a great eater. She eats a lot of veggies and not just crap veggies like corn and carrot. She is pretty adventurous (she tried some of my tabouleh tonight). And, she eats a fairly well balanced diet.
DS, on the other hand, is awful! His diet is incredibly limited and I can only hope that he will try more as he gets older. The food is there for him for the taking at any time, he just won't try a thing. I'm beyond fighting with him about it, mostly because I know that I can raise a good eater and I feel that DS's poor eating has nothing to do with my parenting. Sometimes people are just picky about what they eat.
I know corn isn't that great, but I've never heard carrots called "crap". Why so?
Cooked carrots mostly. Most of the good stuff is lost, and then negated when covered with butter, cheese or a sweet glaze. I have nothing against either, they're just not the only veggies DD eats or the ones she mostly eats. She eats more green beans, broccoli, asparagus and tomatoes. I wouldn't consider her a good eater if the only veggies she ate were corn and carrots.
I needed to be able to vote 2x as my older DD - I love how she eats, she eats better than I do. DD#2 is pretty picky but does OK, she has a huge sweet tooth like her mommy and is not too keen on veggies but overall, we can get her to at least try most things and she eats decently but has room for improvement.
DS is super picky and will not touch vegs. He has been like that since he started solid food. He liked EVERYTHING except the veggie stuff! It's a struggle EVERYDAY.
That said, he absolutely loves fruit so it's not a 100% crap diet!
It's a pretty sweeping generalization to ASSume that everyone is feeding kids carrots covered in butter and sweet glazes. My kids eat them absolutely plain and I am perfectly happy with that. They also love corn. Sue me. It's far from the only veggie that they eat.
Peas are starchy. I'll bet you're a pea snob, too.

Here was my FB status update from dinner tonight:
