Official "Hello!"

Hi there ladies! I have been lurking here for the last few weeks, but I was hesitant to post until after my first appointment. First, I have to thank each of you for being so honest about this process. I am a newbie, and it is a great thing to hear about other experiences.

I had my first U/S today after having a BFP on 4/3. I knew before I got the home positive that I was pregnant (intuition?) so I scheduled a blood draw for 4/2 and sure enough - elevated HCG (though still not enough for a positive home test!) We were not yet TTC, but we were not TTA either, so we were pleasantly surprised. I have odd cycles, so I had no idea how far along I was until today! It looks like I am 6 weeks and 2 days - due 12/22!

My question to you ladies has to do with the U/S. The technician showed me the sac and pointed out the "baby", and we could see a faint movement, but we could not really "see" the heartbeat, nor hear it. The tech said that my uterus was tilted back and it was hard to get right next to the sac. She said to reschedule an U/S in 10-12 days, so I would be further along. Did anyone else have a positive outcome after not hearing a HB at 6 weeks? I am really nervous, but I also feel like the tech was so calm, and that she did not recommend that I come back in 3-5 days or anything communicating urgency.

Thank you for your feedback, and for sharing each of your stories! It is great to go through this with you all!

  • I don't think many people hear a hb at 6 weeks. You might be able to see it, but not hear it. It's still very early for you though so don't worry! If the tech wasn't worried, you shouldn't be either.

  • First of all.. congrats! So happy for you :)

As far as the ultrasound question goes - I would trust your doctor. If she didn't seem worried about anything, then I would try not to worry yourself (I know it's easier said than done though!)

I do believe that 6 weeks is still pretty early to see a heartbeat. Especially if she made the comment about your uterus being tilted back. The baby is so, so tiny now - that if they can't get close enough to your uterus, then it would be even harder to detect the heartbeat.

I wish you the best of luck with everything! :)

  • Welcome and congrats!! We have the same due date. :) My OB didn't do an U/S when I went in last week because she said until about 7 weeks there isn't too much to see and people get disgruntled and worried. We have our first U/S May 23rd.
