possible loss...is this for real?

(posted on 1st tri too)

I called my OB's office today because of my ongoing spotting and my cramps and backache I've had.  The backache/cramps are intermittment, were only bad on Friday night and then stopped.  Now if I have any cramps they are dull and achey.  The spotting is more the norm.  I get it mostly when having a BM it seems but it comes and goes at other times too.  It is mostly brown or pink but was rusty brown red on Thursday night.

So I am telling the nurse all this and she says well just so you know it sounds like you are having a miscarriage.  So matter of fact.  No emotion.  Just like she was telling me, just so you know it's raining outside.  I am waiting for a call back to see who can see me and when but after this I think I may be researching new doctors.  Maybe I'm a tad emotional but I just coudln't believe she said that.

If I were miscarrying wouldn't I be having constant cramps?  Or not necessarily?

Please send some T&P my way!

Re: possible loss...is this for real?

  • I'm so very sorry, what a horrible experience, that nurse is horrible.

Honestly, the only way you'll know for sure is to have a scan and maybe get your numbers run. I had a missed m/c last year and had no symptoms of it at all - was still having pregnancy symptoms the entire time and had no idea anything was wrong.

I have heard that a natural miscarriage is impossible to miss, that it involves horrible cramps and lots of bleeding, but every situation is different. Do you have an appointment to see a doctor?

I'm sending tons of thoughts your way - I'm having brown spotting and bleeding and have for weeks now and my doctor isn't concerned at all, so there are tons of potential situations you can be in for sure.

  • Do they plan to run your betas? That's the way they usually determine whether or not a pregnancy is ending. When I miscarried, I had very light spotting for nearly a week before I actually passed clots, etc. Just try and rest right now, there isn't much to do but wait. I'm so sorry you're going through this, and I'm sorry that nurse was so rude. T&P for a sticky baby.

  • I agree with the pp....the only way you'll know how your pregnancy is progressing is to have serial betas or an ultrasound. You won't be able to tell how things are going based on the severity of spotting/cramps.

I'll think positive thoughts for you!!!

  • Thanks everyone....the nurse said she'd call me back b/c my dr was in surgery today and that she'd put a message through to the other drs in the office to get me in and would then call back.  Waiting now...I just had my betas done last Wed and Friday and they were good so maybe they'll do more betas....thanks again everyone!

I thought this too until I had one. It started out with intermittent spotting - mostly after BMs, but then it progressed to all the time. I noticed cramps the day after spotting started. All I had was bleeding and mild cramping - nothing that kept me out of work. Actually - I never missed work.

But Stace - this doesn't mean that this is what you're going through. Just get an action plan together when you can talk with your doc. That nurse sucks - I'm so sorry. :(

  • Um, that sounds pretty presumptive. I've had a m/c, and I knew. It hurts like hell. I've been spotting on and off for a week and so have a lot of the girls on here. I've also had red blood with BM and I really think it's just strain. You just have to get your numbers in is all. And maybe this is a good excuse to get a peek at the LO Smile

  • Oh I'm so sorry you're going through this! And that nurse sounds absolutely horrid! Either she's not a mother or she's really just a stick-in-the-mud!

I think that miscarriages can be different for alot of people. When I had mine a couple months ago - I had no symptoms and only found out at my first ultrasound. I started bleeding and cramping (BAD!) a week or so later.

I agree with everyone else who says that the only way that you can be completely sure is by seeing your doctor and either getting an ultrasound and/or having your beta levels drawn 2 times.

I'm sorry again and I really hope that everything will turn out just fine!

Please keep us updated. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!

  • Thinking of you. I know that they can be pretty insensitive sometimes about what we are thinking and going through.

  • Thank you everyone for the support and love, made my day so much better!  I went for bloodwork today and go again Wednesday.  My primary dr had me go for bloodwork last week so I am happy I can at least compare today's results to last Fridays once I get them.  They said if my levels are high enough we may be able to do an u/s too, fx for that!

Thank you again for all your T&P, I'm trying to stay positive!
