Keeping cool in the carseat

We are one day in to a long road trip (a rt total of about 2000 miles in 10 days to see family) and our son is already not loving it. He runs super hot usually anyway and by the end of today's leg (300 miles?) he had a heat rash and was wailing.

Our ac kind of sucks, we have a black car and his seat (graco snug ride 32) is so padded.  Any suggestions to keep him cool?

Thanks

Re: Keeping cool in the carseat

  • If you aren't already...keep him in just a thin onesie and at every stop get him outside in the fresh air.  If he sweats, you might change his onesie at every stop too so you make sure that sweat doesn't stick and cause a worse heat rash.  You might also buy one of those hot flash fans (the little ones that fit in your purse) and sit in the back seat with him and hold that to him every once in a while.  Depending on where he gets hot easiest, you might also keep a damp washcloth with you to just swipe across his neck/face to keep him cool.  Hope this helps.

This sounds like great advice!  Our LO gets hot in the carseat too, so we just put her in a onesie and she's fine.

  • Ditto the PP's.  Also, I don't know what your carseat is made of, but I know mine is lined with synthetic material, which usually holds heat and doesn't absorb sweat.  Maybe you could put a very thin cotton cloth diaper down before you put him in there so that the sweat would absorb little better.  Also, maybe you could use a little bit of cornstarch on his back and the backs of his legs to reduce chafing.  You have to be very careful with it so that he doesn't inhale it, but maybe put a little on your hands and rub it on there.

  • They sell battery operated clip-on stroller fans that could could clip on to the car seat handle or the post of the head rest.  If you can't find one in your baby store you can get one from amazon.
