AAC device evaluation question

Our speech therapist is suspecting that DS (2.5 y/o) who has autism might also have apraxia of speech. We have been researching a few different devices and the iPad in trying to find the right product for him. We are considering going through an AAC evaluation to find out what device would best suit him. If you have done this evaluation, what was it like for your LO and what did you think of the process? How has the device helped your LO and your family?
