Babies: 0 - 3 Months

oz of breastmilk per day? (I'm an EPer)

Our pedi told us last month that he should be eating about 30oz per day by 3 months. I struggle to get him to eat 25oz - I always offer him 5oz bottles and he rarely takes the whole thing, sticking right around 4oz for the most part. He's in the 25th percentile for weight and I'm concerned that he won't have gained enough when we go back in a few weeks and she'll get on my case about supplementing with formula. I don't need to supplement, I have plenty of milk, hundreds of ounces in the freezer because I outproduce what he eats.

I don't know what my point is, I'm just feeling like a bad mom because he doesn't weigh that much I guess. How much breastmilk does your baby eat?

  • When I send bottles to daycare they are 4 oz. and mine is 4 months old. I read that 25oz is average so you are right where you should be if you ask me...in my non medical opinion Big Smile

  • I think you sound right on track. Some babies are just not meant to be rolly polly but stay little peanuts. My little guys are like that :-) They are gaining steadily but I don't think they are ever going to be pudgy. They are 2 months old, eat 4 oz.'s during the day and about 6 right before bedtime.

  • My DD eats about 30 oz per day, but is only in the 10th percentile for weight and the 25th percentile for height.  I'm actually more concerned about this than her pedi.  I just asked about this at her 4 mth visit, and she explained to me that she is progressing just fine.  She is consistently gaining weight, and has stayed right on her bell curve.  Our pedi explained to me that if she had deviated from her bell curve then she would be concerned.  She reassured me that I just have a petite thin baby, and probably always will.  She told me that has been her body type since she was born, and that she is well within the healthy range.  Our pedi said its more important to look at her individually overtime.

Maybe this is the case for you?

  • I'm pretty sure kellymom.com says that 25oz is the average.  I EP, but I supplement with lots of formula due to supply issues.  DD eats 7 4oz bottles per day.  We had a really hard time with her weight gain at the beginning, but now she is doing well.

Don't feel like a bad mom, 25 percentile is not bad!

  • Fenton takes in about 28 oz's per day in Breast milk and another 6-12 oz's in formula.

He is a big eater though always has been so I don't know if I am of much help.

  • OK, I feel better. I'll ask about his personalized growth curve, thanks.
