High-Risk Pregnancy

New here with lots of questions!!

I just took a test yesterday and am only about 6 weeks. I have to call the Doc on Monday but does anyone know if I would be considered high risk? I have hypertension, hypothroidism, terrible seasonal allergies, have been on anti anxeity pills and have diabetes that runs in my family. Should I push to see the doctor as soon as possible or should I just try to be a good patient and take the appointment they can give me? I just don't want to do anything that could harm our new little person!  PS. I am pretty excited!!Big Smile

  • When you call the doctors office, I would tell them everything you just listed because if you are on meds, some may potentially harm the baby (or they might not, I'm not  pharmacist or a dr) so hopefully they'll tell you when you call. A lot of times, they won't schedule you until you are so many weeks anyway, at least where I go. But, with your history they may get you in sooner. I would request it, but that doesn't mean you'll get it. Good luck!

  • I would definitely tell them all of that when you call especially if you are taking medication for anything. I do not have experience with all of that, but I do know there are only a couple blood pressure medications that are considered safe during pregnancy so you want to make sure you are taking one of those (assuming you are even taking hypertension medication). Congrats!

  • Thanks ladies, I do take medication for the HBP and the thyroid disorder... I was planning on calling first thing Monday and sharing everything but thought if anyone else was in the same boat it could help. Thanks for the encouragement though!
  • yes, call them monday morning.  you'll have to switch to a "safe" hbp medicine and the anti-anxiety pills may need to be weaned off of, depending on risk/benefit.

  • I have HBP and am considered high risk because of it.  I have to self monitor at home and as I move through the second and third trimesters I will have more frequent ultrasounds.

  • Just let them know what kinda of prescriptions you are on. I do not think you would be considered high risk until later if your blood pressure turns into Pre-e or you develop GD. Most regular OB's are just fine to be with because they can keep control of your blood pressure, thyroid and all. I would not be to conserned, just make sure they keep an eye on your thyroid (plays a big roll if pregnancy). They will let you know if you need to be seen with a MFM! Best of luck on your pregnancy!

Chances are you will need to switch your HBP medication as a lot of doctors don't prescribe the ones that are deemed safe for pregnancy. I would call the doc today and see what they want you to do. List any medications you are on and see what they say. Are you also a diabetic now or does it just run in the family?

I am only seeing a peri for this pregnancy because of my HBP that developed with my first LO and then popped up again the second I got pregant. With HBP runs the risk of developing pre-e later in pregnancy (which is why doc has me taking a tablespoon of safflower oil everyday, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay) so you'll probably be monitored a little more closely. I have to take my BP at home 4 times a day and I am on meds.

Congratulations and it's not so bad. You get to know your doctors pretty well as you'll probably see them more often than the typical pregnancy...that's always a plus for a better relationship! :)
