Baby Names

Boston

My husband is in love with this name & has been for a very long time. He wanted this to be the name of his 1st son born to his ex wife 5 years ago... and tried again with his 2nd son lol. This is his 3rd boy and he really likes the name. I like it.. BUT 1. We live about an hour & a half from Boston, so we hear it a lot and 2. My family lives in the south and would pronounce it Bawston.

Huh?

Thoughts?

Re: Boston

  • I personally wouldn't... maybe for a mn?
  • I really, really don't like it and the fact that your DH wanted to use it for kids with his ex makes it only worse. It's got too much "baggage."

  • DH and I both love it, but I also think it works best as a middle name. I guess I wouldn't want it to be lumped in with the London/Brooklyn trend.

I guess I should add that I lived there for several years, his family lives outside Boston, and we are Red Sox fans, so I am probably biased!

MN will be DH's 1st name (also his grandfathers MN).

I agree & shot it down quickly in the beginning. Knowing he discussed this with the ex and she discussed it with her family... ya know? But thought I'd give it another consideration because he likes it so much... but you may be right.

  • No, just no. I am originally from the Boston area and cannot understand the appeal of this name. Yes me and DH are Red Sox fans and we love going to Boston, but naming a child Boston seems just wrong.
  • Nope. I don't generally dig place names, but this one is just not good either. It reminds me of Mr. Boston, a creepy contestant on I Live New York (featuring New York from Flava of Love).

Just because you lived there doesn't mean you should name your LO after it! There are plenty of great boy names; keep looking.

  • If you are already using your husband's family name for a middle name and most likely his last name, I feel you should have major say in the child's first name and DH should understand this.
  • I usually don't completely despise "place" names (ex: I love the name Austin) but for multiple reasons I think this isn't the best choice for your child.  If he loves it, and you don't compromise and use it as a mn.

In this case, and because of the baggage, I would say no. maybe get a pet one day and name it that?

I agree, is a bad name (no matter what) and has way too much baggage

  • My sister-in-law's SIL (ha!) just named her baby boy Boston Ryan. I like a lot of place names, but I don't care for this one at all.

Also, there's no way in hell I would name my kid a name my husband and his ex-wife considered (even if she nixed it the second he mentioned it). If that's immature, so be it.

    Middle name.

I don't have strong opinions about place names, but I think this one is ridiculous.  But, perhaps that's because I just dislike the city of Boston.

what!?! that makes me sad, I love it here so much.... but, to each his own.

  • I think it is sweet that he has loved A name at all...and for a long time.  I have to say us women do this all the time (love a name forever) and the men are far less sensitive if we discussed it with an EX or not. We usually get our way too! That being said....I think it is so so sweet of you to concider his feelings and give this a thought for him, and it is NOT the worst name I have ever come across. It is like Brooklyn and London, Paris ect.........NMS at all. I mean this in the nicest way, but could you get him a sweet puppy already named BOSTON    Wink
  • Save it for a future dog or cat... not a human.

    Sorry.

  • "Love that dirty water" is all I can think of. Dislike.

Jow would you pronounce it, if not BAW-ston?

I pronounce it more like Boss-tin, regional thing. And agree, great name for a pet, not a kid.

  • I am curious - how do you pronounce Boston? Bah-ston?

I am in the south, and I would not pronounce it Bawston (that actually sounds like a northern accent to me. I would just pronounce the "o" as a short o).

Regardless, I am not a fan of place names, and Boston is very well-known as a place name. Even us here in the South associate it very strongly with the city, not with a person.

ETA: Oh, Boss-tin. Well, maybe I am just a weird southerner, but that's how I would say it.

  • I think it sounds better as a middle name. But I also would have a problem what this was on his name list iwth the ex and it was veteo'd. It just feels wrong to me.
