December 2012 Moms

I DD'd the multiple clicky poll

I've been informed that it was offensive to call 'spontaneous' twins as "natural/spontaneous".  My apologies to those who were offended.

    This.

The OP asked if our multiples were 'natural.' Another poster and I told her it was offensive, as it basically says those of us who went throught IF  treatments have 'unnatural' kids. I asked her to remove the word 'natural' from her post, and instead she just deleted the whole thing.

  • I didn't see the poll, but yeah.  I know some MoMs are very sensitive to things like that.  There's nothing "unnatural" about their twins kwim?

I understand it.... I'm picky about the term "natural birth".  I think "med-free" is more appropriate if that's what you're talking about.  I had a vaginal delivery with an epidural and I would still call that natural.

  • I thought everyone was nice about pointing out a better word to use.  I didn't know myself so I was happy to learn.  Maybe I missed something but I didn't see a reason to dd.

  • If you did go through IVF and you are having identical, then it was spontaneous...right? If they are fraternal it's because there was more than one egg that fertilized.

Shoot, my baby was conceived while on the NuvaRing...that's pretty spontaneous and un-natural to me!

While that is  crazy chances (holy cow!) the OP specifically wanted to know about IF treatments. The options  for 'how did you get multiples' were 'natural'/spontaneous or Infertility treatments.

  • Hmm I thought I was very nice by saying some moms of multiples would find that term offensive. I would have never really thought about it until my friend who is a mom of twins ranted to me about it. If I say something that another group of people find offensive I would like to know. I didn't mean to cause trouble!

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't see the poll and thought people were offended by the term "spontaneous".

  • I don't understand why someone would be offended by the word natural.  Didn't see the poll but seems weird to be okay with spontaneous but not natural.  I don't think twins can be planned, but they can be the result of the use of meds, or could just result naturally on it's own.  Maybe people shouldn't be so sensitive.
