Babies: 6 - 9 Months

LO doesn't want to sleep in her crib. Frustrated mommy ):

I should start by saying my LO spit up a lot in the beginning, so after she eats, I have always had to keep her upright for a while.  This would sometimes end in her falling asleep, and that is how she fell asleep during her night feedings.  I believe she has gotten used to this and will now not fall asleep in her own most of the time, unless we are in a car, in her stroller walking, and me nursing her to sleep.  We have also struggled with ear infections (3 already in 7 months) regardless of the fact she has been EBF, which has affected her sleeping patterns quite a bit.  She sleeps so good through the night when she doesn't have a cold or ear infection, but she is terrible when she is sick.  Because she has had a cold or ear infection so much in her life, we've struggled keeping her asleep at night.  She will eventually go back to sleep if I nurse her or if we co-sleep.  Because of all the above circumstances, she's been acustomed to not sleep so well in her crib.  I really want her to sleep well ( as well as myself), but she really fights it, I mean REALLY fights it.  I cannot bring it to let her CIO, because I've let her cry, no scream, for 45 minutes before with no avail.  I guess I'm looking for some answers or at least comfort that it gets better.

  • Ferber.  READ the book, don't just assume it's all letting them cry non-stop, it's not.  It will probably be pretty bad for a couple of nights, but if you do it and really stick to it (no giving in!) you will see results in just a few days.  It worked for both my kids. Make sure she's healthy when you start, of course.

  • I haven't intentionally let her cry for long periods either.  I have gone in to comfort her, leaving her still in her crib.  She still screams the entire time I try to soothe her.  I will go back a few times within the long period to comfort her, and she will still be upset.  I am firm with my nighttime schedule too.

  • We did a modified CIO and that really helped.  But like the previous poster mentioned you have to stick it out and not give in.  I think no matter what approach you use you have to set a routine and stick to it so that baby gets used to sleeping in her own crib.

  • Sounds like reflux. Is she on meds? I'd try a wedge under the crib mattress too. I probably wouldn't CIO til I knew something like reflux wasn't bothering her. Btw reflux and ear infections are sometimes linked, so one dr told me.

  • We also did CIO, but I agree with a PP about finding out if there is an underlying issue like reflux. Hello, fellow Iowan! :-)
