Trouble TTC

Feeling a little down...

I have been taking a medication called Femara along with metformin to treat my PCOS.

Two weeks ago I went to my ob-gyn and found a large cyst on my right ovary and two days after that, the cyst ruptured a little and I had to go to the ER for awful pain.

I went in to follow up with my ob-gyn today and saw that the cyst was pretty much gone. He however does not want to continue with any fertility medication for a while and see if I will ovulate with just the metformin alone.

I'm feeling a little down because before the Femara I never ovulated on my own and never got a period at all. I'm worried that the metformin wont be enough. Has anyone had success or know anyone who had success with just metformin?

Thanks for you advice!

  • I think you need to be thankful you're seeing a OB/GYN who has a head on his/her shoulders!!!

Take a break from the meds and let your body work itself out.

Truthfully, you should be seeing an RE anyway.  Best of luck

  • You have to be as aggressive as you want to be, and I think age and other factors come into play with this.  Are you willing to wait it out? Metformin can take several months to work things out (and does not always work).  if you are willing to do this, then go for it.   metformin is not a magic pill, and if you want to/ are willing to do additional IF meds, PLEASE see a RE.

  • I recently started seeing an RE, and he just prescribed me the metformin a few days ago. He says that from 2-4 weeks of taking it, your body should cycle itself out naturally. When it does, I would be doing an ultrasound and taking clomid. If it doesn't, only then will I be given other meds to cycle me out. I would recommend seeing an RE, so you can get the answers you are looking for. But also, so that you can work as a team with a doctor that can individualize a plan for you. OB/Gyn are great, but they are like visiting a generalist as opposed to a specialist, and that is what you need here. I totally get it with the PCOS thing, as now 4 different doctors have diagnosed me w it. Best of luck to you! Stay hopeful!

  • Are you seeing a specialist? I had a cyst my first cycle with the RE and they just put me on the birth control pill for a month and then proceeded with the treatments once that cyst was gone. I don't have PCOS though.

  • To be honest, Metformin didnt work for me at all...when I finally left the second ob-gyn and went to an RE, he took me off it right away.
