Update: new Nanny. WWYD

I posted a few days ago that I am going back to work in about a week (maybe sooner) and we are having BIL's gf watch DS.  They came over on Sunday and we vaguely discussed the job and we decided on today that she would come over for the day and "train."   She's been writing on Facebook all week about a sore throat..nothing that sounded too serious.   This morning 1 hour before she was supposed to be here, I get the "I'm sick, I'm sorry.. "   I am freaking pissed, she's known she was sick all week.  After a few back and forth texts, I told her she was really making me second guess myself with the being sick already and only telling me 1 hour before.  I called and talked to her about giving me more notice, that I can't be calling in sick to my new job already, I need her to be reliable, etc..and Does she 100% want this job.   We agreed that she would come tomorrow instead.  Am I overreacting?  I find it really screwy that she would cancel on the training day with 1 hour notice (The flu..I understand, a sore throat, no.)   I'm upset enough have to leave my DS for the first time with someone else all day..  WWYD?

Edit: This is a short term agreement, a couple months, then DS will be in daycare at least part time.  We are having her sign an agreement.

  • First, I would never employ someone who was even vaguely family. They don't think the rules apply (or at least that has been my experience!).

Second, I wouldn't want  a sick person around LO, but that's just me. If she was talking about being sick all week, then yeah, it's pretty lame to pull this last second. But I still wouldn't want her around.

Sounds like it might be good to keep looking for a new nanny! Sorry! Good luck!

Ugh, Yep I'm wondering what I've gotten myself into, but we are going to try it.   I don't want sick people around him either.  He'd be around sick kids at daycare as well so there's no real getting around it.   Good luck to me Yes

  • Even if it's only for a couple of months, I would look for someone different. Use her until either you are confident that she will be a good fit or until you find someone who will.

I was hoping to hear from you.  Thanks that's sort of what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if I'm overreacting.

  • i would definitely be irritated, it's not like she woke up ill this morning.  I would stick it out with her since you are going back to work in the next week, but keep your options open in terms of identifying alternative or back-up child care, just in case.   With a new job, you really can't afford to have your full time child care provider be unreliable.  Good luck!

I just worry that she will think it's NBD to call off for a sore throat/headache/hangover. When you are a nanny, you work unless you're contagious. I hope it all works out with her, but this is a red flag to me. Good luck, and keep us updated.
