Biblio or other Prilosec mommies

The Zantac has not been working great for DS lately, even with an upped dose. The pedi prescribed Prilosec, but it tastes so incredibly nasty (we tried it, it's like poison) that DS won't take it. We tried mixing it with formula, gripe water, and the two together - no luck. I have to give him 4ml a day, which is a lot to force down his throat. Just wondering if anyone else had the same issue and how you managed to get it into your LO.

Also, did your pedi tell you to give it on an empty stomach? Mine didn't, but I've read elsewhere that others say that. I'm thinking it would be good to bf him after giving it, but obviously not if it needs to be on an empty stomach.

Thanks!

Re: Biblio or other Prilosec mommies

  • Haven't got there yet, we are looking at Prevacid because the Zantac doesn't seem to work well enough. Also, since I'm not BFing we have switched to Nutramagen formula. It seems less stressful on her system but she still has the uncomfortable spit-up although it's not as bad with the Zantac. I actually use Prilosec for horrid GERD and it works like a charm even though it took about 2 weeks to take full effect. Is there any way the pharmacy could mix it with something? I know Target does this... I take Prilosec either on an empty or full stomach as an adult it doesn't matter.

  • We went from Zantac to Prevacid (with DS). It is AWFUL! I agree with the poison part if it's anything like prevacid. We got the liquid that tasted like battery acid and he would take it in formula, but after reading and looking into proper dosing I realized that it probably wasn't working as well like that. So I tried giving it alone which was a joke. He promptly vomited that up. Next we got it flavored. I believe grape is the only flavor they can use. I'm not sure if it's because he was older at this point, but he took it ok. He was definitely still grossed out, but took it. I tried it and was shocked at how much the grape hid the flavor. It had to be much more than the formula.

Nobody told me how to properly time it, but when nothing seemed to be working I started reading up and found that they should not eat or drink 1/2 hr before or after. That really improved things. Anything like milk/formula will neutralize it or whatever and it will basically start working on whatever you feed them before it has time to work on the stomach

  • Thanks a lot, lassies. Ok, I tried to write ladies, but that autocorrect is really funny (at least at 4am). I'll see if they can flavor it and just try my best until then. Hopefully it will work better - the poor guy is really struggling.
