I have an irrational annoyance today

I hate when people biitch about having no money, being broke, etc., and then I hear the next week they're spending extravagant amounts of money on stupid things.

I know it's none of my business how people choose to spend their money, but I don't want to hear stupid stories of how ignorant they are with money either! I feel I have a small right to judge if you want to wave it in front of me.

Examples:
1) SMIL's brother (DH's step-uncle, keep up here...) used to be a mega millionaire. He pissed it all away. We have to hear all the time about how poor and sad he is now, but then just last night SMIL mentions he's going to Greece for a friend's son's wedding, and renting a sailboat to sail around Greece. Really?? Again, none of my business, but REALLY?

2) MIL loves to biitch about how poor she is now that she quit her job (on her own accord, for no reason other than she hates to work). Now every weekend I have to hear how much money they've spent on concert tickets, clothes, parties, etc. Now she wants a boob lift. She's 60. WTF needs a boob lift at 60...? Not to mention I pay her only salary, so I guess I'm now paying for the lift? And she thinks she'll be able to babysit DD 5 days post-surgery. Hmm

Feel free to flame, or add your own Wink

  • My SIL talks about how her BFs family is broke now compared to how they were when they were in college.  OK, they just sold their estate on the coast of Maine, but they took a 2 week YACHT trip around Greece last summer. And bought a home somewhere in rural Maine. And he gets $70 haircuts. give me a break.

  • LOL Mrs Emily, a guy gets $70 haircuts? Does that include a happy ending or something? Sheesh.

I love the people who are actually broke, you never know it.

  • I would never claim that we are broke.  We're not...  far from it.  Not in a rich sort of way, but in a I'm-not-worried-about-where-my-kids'-next-meals-are-coming-from way.

That being said, I'm sure someone out there could take a look at my finances and call me broke.  That's fine.  It's all relative as far as I'm concerned.

So, while I'm not broke, I look at some of my friends who claim to be broke and critique their financial decisions based on my opinion about wants v. needs.  But, that's because when they say they're broke, I'm using my definition of broke.  i don't think many people really understand what that means, and they throw it around way too casually.

Not flaming...  Not giving any specific examples.  Kind of just saying, "Yeah, I get it," in a roundabout way.

insane right? he goes to some fancy salon in NYC.

  • I know people who cry poor all the time when it comes to gift giving and doing things they don't want to do, but have enough money to go out to bars/dinner and trips all the time!  Paying $7 per beer to watch a football (or any other sport) game at some bar almost every weekend and then crying poor really irritates me!

UGH we have tons of friends that do that! They use money for things they don't want to actually do. Then you see a FB status talking about going out to a fancy schmancy restaurant or something the next day lol. I don't get as mad about that, I see right through the excuses :)

  • I agree!!

On the other end of that.. my DH and I are very budget conscious, we don't have gobs of money to spend. AND I HATE when his buddies give us a hard time for not spending money. (i.e. Going to the bar and spending a crap ton of money every weekend, etc). We have bills to pay and responsibilities people!
