Any other LOs have MSPI or reflux?

We went to the GI today for a follow up.   Sofia is doing really well, gaining like a champ.  She's at 18lb9oz - not bad for being 4lb9oz at 32.5 weeks.  Smile

Anyhow, she is still on Prilosec and we are adjusting her dose up just for this weight and will let it taper if we don't see further signs.  (We've been seeing some silent reflux signs lately, probably because she outgrew her last dose)  If your LO is on Prilosec or something else, how did the tapering go for him/her?

We are also on Neocate for MSPI.  Our doc said to add some baked goods that have milk - I'm thinking Mums.  Anything else I should consider?  Our doc suggested yogurt around 9.5 months, and then about a month later cheese if she does well with yogurt.

What are your plans for introducing dairy to your LO?

  • Just had Paige's 9 mo appointment today and the pedi said not to introduce anything dairy until 12 mo.  He said we should start with almond milk at 12 months then slowly start adding in dairy items and try to transition to whole WCM by 18 months!  Your daughter is so cute BTW.

That is so interesting, what your pedi said.  Is your daughter on formula or breast milk?  I think the GI wants to make the transition sooner than later because she is on Neocate and doesn't want her on it past 12 months.

(thanks for your kind words about dd! your LO is adorable. She's so cute in her 9mo pic!)

  • Paige is on Similac Alimentum.  He wants us to do almond milk by 12 months then transition to the whole WCM. So she would be off the alimentum sometime in her 12th month!  He also said we could start the yogurt or cheese after her 12 month appointment on July 24.

    Thank you :)

DD was on Zantac. I gave her the same dose for a long time, not increasing the amount for her growth. Then we went down to one dose a day and did that for a couple of weeks. Then we did nothing. She still spits up but she no longer cries when she does it or fusses 24/7 like she did when she was small and her reflux was bad.

She's been fully off Zantac for about a month now. It's nice not giving her medicine every day and she's as happy off it as she was on so that's makes her momma very happy!

Glad to hear she is doing so well!  We haven't been spitting up that much at all, its been more silent reflux and I can see it bother her.  I think we'll be weaning in a similar fashion in the next few months.

  • Lincoln has been on prescription Prevacid for several months. We haven't given it to him for the past two days to see if he would vomit. He has his 9-month appt on Friday and the doctor always asks me if I think he still needs it. At his 6-month appointment he would still vomit a TON if we skipped a dose. He has been OK but I can tell still has some reflux. His sole symptom has always been vomiting so I can tell he's trying to hold down some acid while burping. We will likely lower the dose and then go off it completely. We were in fear of Barrett's Esophagus so there was no rush to wean him off it too soon. I won't miss paying $100/month for the meds!

As for dairy, our doctor encouraged us to give him little tastes of whatever we are eating. He has had yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc. with no problems. The yogurt is in packaged baby food that said it was age-appropriate. The cheese was miniscule and the ice cream was just a little bite. I will ask on Friday to be safe; there was nothing noted in the hand-out the doctor have us. He's a pretty liberal doctor so it will be interesting to see if he scolds me, LOL.

  • DD was on Zantac until 5 months old. I started weaning her when it seemed more medicine got spit out then in her mouth, and she seemed fine. So I weaned her slowly and she's done well.

As for dairy - we don't have any intolerances so I have intro'd yogurt (Greek) and she does fine. I would consult a nutritionist for this area however, rather than the pedi. I find the nutritionist knows so much more about diets for babes.

A GI had better be able to recommend food progression in kids that suffer from MSPI and food allergies.  The effects of MSPI and food allergies are often found in the GI tract, and if the doc you're working with can't help you in the dietary department, I'd find a new GI.  There are very serious conditions associated with the GI tract that are food-induced.  If they can't make recommendations or set guidelines for their patients, they're not able to do their jobs.  So, as I said...  Find a new GI if your GI can't help you out.

DS1 is still on Omeprazole.  He will never be weaned off of the meds, although he has some other issues going on.  He also has a dairy allergy -- gets hives.  We have eliminated all dairy from the house.  We use all almond products.  It is argued that too much soy product is not good for boys, and I wanted something that had more fat than soy (at least in its whole form).

What sucks with dietary restrictions is that the "natural" foods seemed to be heavily marketed as less fat or less calories than their typical counterparts.  I don't need my kid to consume less calories.  I need him to consume MORE.

I was speaking more of a situation where it's a general pedi not a specialist.

  • Our pedi is deferring to our GI on the introduction of dairy into her diet.  We keep in close contact with our GI via email and keep a daily intake/food log to track any issues.  We'll be bringing in poopy diapers for testing regularly as well. I was actually wondering if we would be referred to a nutritionist, but our GI seems to be on top of the diet piece.  Who knows how long we will be on Prilosec - I also won't miss the big copay, and will be happy to be off the Neocate too! ($600+ per month!)

Thanks for sharing all your experiences.
