Constipated Baby...

Anyone else with a constipated LO? He was been having trouble for several days. He didn't go for almost 2 days, then finally had a BM that looked like a lump of play-doh, had several regular BMs, now we are back to not going at all yesterday and nothing today. He is passing gas and he will turn red and try to go but nothing. I know it must be hurting him since he starts crying and whimpering.  Its breaking my heart. I did read online that rectal stimulation with a vaselined Q-tip can help so I tried it earlier but it didn't do anything. Any suggestions?

I read several conflicting things about using Karo syrup, too.  This is what my mom said they used years ago.

Re: Constipated Baby...

  • The Q-tip/rectal thermometer has always worked for me. Did you stimulate in a circular motion?

My SIL also suggested taking a warm wash cloth and pressing it against the anus, holding it there for a few seconds, and repeating (I hope that made sense). It actually worked for DD1.

  • I twisted the Q-tip very slowly. I only inserted it a little bit. The cotton tip was still a tiny bit visible.  His little hiney was really cinched up and he started screaming. It totally freaked me out that I was hurting him and I stopped. :0(

  • Paige has been constipated the last three days. This is what has worked for us. First, we have her sit in the warm bath. It calms her down and seems to make her feel a little better. Then we lay her on her back on our bed and alternate bicycling her legs and rubbing her belly (right under the belly button, clockwise and applying a tiny bit of pressure). It's worked every time! It takes about 5 minutes usually. If you have a rectal thermometer I would recommend that over a Q-tip. We tried our thermometer yesterday but it didn't work.

  • I haven't had any issues yet, but someone on here mentioned putting a warm washcloth over their belly while doing the bicycle legs. Along with all the other things as well. But I suppose TKx2's idea of a warm bath has the same effect.

    Good luck!
