Re: I just got the summary of charges from the hospital.

  • Wow. Mine didn't break it down, but for me only (baby is on different insurance) my bill was almost 10k for a vaginal delivery. 1,200 was for the epi, but it was the best 1,200 ever spent. lol

Hot dang... we got my summary (not LO's yet) and we're already surpassing $13k. I did end up with a c-section though ($5,000!!!) and room/board was a whopping $3,720. Thankfully, we only have to pay $400 of that... but yuck!!!

  • WOW! I might go for an epidural just because I won't see a bill...just kidding. That is crazy!

I live in Canada on the US border and my OB wanted to make sure I head towards my hospital with plenty of time (1.5 hours in from the border) otherwise the ambulance will take me to the US side since it is the closest hospital and it is very expensive on their OB budget here but I had no idea!

  • Wow, that is pretty reasonable.  It's an additional $900 per night at mine for a single room, so I can't imagine how how the initial room and board charge is!

  • This is why I am so very thankful that DH is military and TriCare covered everything.

    Whoa at the 13k.

  • I have gotten a couple of bills from my L&D - but I'm sure there will be more.  I was in for 5 days, in labor for 36 hours, and then had an emergency c/s.

But for added fun, I went to the ER one week PP, and then was admitted to the hospital for 8 days for an infection.  Now, I am on home health care with a nurse visiting my house a few times a week for 4-6 weeks.

Without insurance, this would be a $250,000 treatment.  I'll probably get away with paying $3-4K total.

  • That is the actual rate. I had a very uncomplicated med-free delivery (was only in the hospital for 27 hours total), so that contributes to it being so cheap.

I pre-paid my OB something like $700 for her delivery charges.

  • LOL between the hospital stay and my OB charges it was almost 20K for my delivery.

Thank god for insurance!!!  I won't be paying more than $500 of it.

  • That's actually pretty cheap.  My bills are still coming in, so far $32,717.68 has been billed.  The hospital's pedi has not billed yet.  My insurance paid about $16802.  My ins. paid over $7K for DD's stay, she had two extra days in there under the lights. I was only billed $250 which is the oop max for her/DS.  I met my oop max earlier in the year.
Sorry no paragraphs, bumping from my phone.

  • My insurance is tricare but with the reserves I'm wondering how much mine will turn out to be.

We have Tricare Reserve Select too and I'm not really sure what we'll end up paying. I've heard as little as nothing to something like $25 per day for the hospital stay. Either way, I'm not expecting much of a bill. I hope I don't get a big surprise bill.

  • That actually seems reasonable to me. The 12 hours I spent in L&D a few months ago for monitoring, IV fluids and a shot of terbutaline cost over $6000 so I'm expecting the birth and hospital stay for me and baby to be much more.

  • About $50k for me for emergency c-section and stay. For my kids over $100k a piece in Brigham NICU and then when they were transferred to level 2 NICU closer to home $100k a piece (over), plus ambulance transfer of $3,500 a piece. (3 week total NICU stay). Out of pocket total is $1700

  • I just got the bill for my LO's 44 day stay in intensive care.  It was close to $11K per DAY.  And, that doesn't include the surgery that he just had 2 wks ago.  Thank God that we have good insurance and will only have to pay about $3K total.

  • We got mine first and for a vaginal delivery with epi was like over $13k and LO spent 8 days in NICU and his was over $24k.
  • Yikes!  Looking at those totals makes me glad I married a teacher!  His awesome healthcare coverage made my cost = $0!  All prenatal and baby wellchecks are free too.

Ours is something like this.  Except we only had to pay $150 transfer fee from the regular hospital to the childrens hospital.  I think the rest is covered...we shall see.
