Hi all,
This is my first time on this board, but it was suggested by the other boards I frequent. I have a question about my DD. She is 5.5 months old, and since 2 months old (when I had to go back to work and introduced the bottle), she has been pretty much been refusing to eat. From months 0-2, she was EBF and gained 5 lbs (born 8lbs 3 oz, went to 13 lb, 1oz at 2 month appt). When she started her hunger strike, she only gained 8 oz from months 2-3. She did have the stomach flu in there, but her bottles were only 1-2.5 oz 4-6 times a day. So, she was below 10 oz. She did BF during the night, but would suck for about 10 secs and be done. She did this a few times a night, and sometimes in the evenings and mornings.
From months 3-5 she has gained another 4 lbs (she was at 17 lbs when I took her in for an ear infection 2 weeks ago). She is up to 2-5 oz bottles (more 2 than 4 or 5) now, 4-5 times a day, and still BFs at night.
My question is this: she is gaining well, but eating little. I estimate between 12-20 oz a day (closer to 12-15). She may be getting more at night lately, because for the last 2 weeks or so, she has been up 'grazing' at night (we cosleep). Could I have a super high milk fat content? How do I go about finding that out? I have heard of women running tests on theirs, but I have no idea where I would find someone to do that, or even if I should.
I worry more about her dehydrating herself than anything. She does have 4-6 wet diapers a day, but they aren't sopping (only 1-2 are). The rest are sorta wet (we use Pampers). She also has 1-3 BMs a day. I just don't want her to have a seizure or anything from having low electrolytes or blood sugars. But, she hasn't had any problems the last 3 months of doing this....so I am really at a loss. Her eyes produce tears, she doesn't have a sunken fontenelle and her mouth is always wet or drooling.
I have taken her to the doctor about 10 times in 3 months for this. I have also gone to a Ped GI specialist on my own. No one can find an issue with this (although, they haven't done anything invasive at this point). She is on 7.5 mg of Prevacid for reflux. She has a horrible overactive gag reflex (we can't use a syringe, has to be spoon-fed for any meds otherwise she throws up).
My DS was not at all like this, so it is new to me. I have no idea if she has a growth hormone problem, or if this is pretty common (to eat so little and still be gaining pretty 'normally').
What do you think?
