Onion tears stronger when pregnant?

I just chopped an onion for the bolognese sauce we're having tonight and man that onion really killed my eyes! I usually tear up from them but this was even from half of an onion that came out of the fridge. They usually don't bother me when they've been cut in half and stored in the fridge. I closed my eyes at one point until I realized I might like to keep all of my fingers. I don't think I have ever had such a bad reaction from onions except that time I processed twenty + shallots for shallot jam. Is this a pregnancy thing? Or am I just nuts?

  • I noticed that same thing. I'm a cook, and at work I definitely feel more sensitive to onions. I thought I was crazy

  • I noticed this too, not just with the tears!  I normally love onions in everything, but if I cut one I can smell it strongly on my fingers (no matter how much I wash or even scrub my hands) for about 24-36 hours and it really turns my stomach :(

  • I made dinner almost 5 hours ago and my eyes are still a little sting-y from the onion! I have not really noticed this before tonight but I haven't been cooking that much lately. It didn't even occur to me that it might be baby-related!

  • I'm guessing its because our oxygen intake is larger when pregnant. So we breath more, take in more..  Could be why.

  • I thought something weird was just going on when I noticed this! I chopped an onion the other day and not only were my eyes watering like crazy, my nose started running and I couldn't stop sneezing too. It was so weird!

  • I wonder?  I haven't chopped too many onions since being pregnant but yesterday I chopped some green onions, which NEVER bother me, and it was only 5 of them, and it absolutely killed my eyes.  So maybe there is something to your theory!
