Freezing breastmilk

I started to pump yesterday and I have 2 medela pump and freeze bags from last  night with 3 ounces each.  It was late at night and I was really tired and forgot to try and get out as much as I could before I put the bag in the freezer.  Do you think this is a problem?  Do I have to throw out this milk now?  Or should I just thaw it and make sure to use in 3-4 days like it is a fridge store?  Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Re: Freezing breastmilk

  • I'm not sure if it needs to be thrown out or not. I don't use the storage bags - I have a milk tray that freezes milk in one ounce sticks - but as far as thawing it and putting it in the fridge to use - if it is previously frozen and thawed - I believe that it needs to be used the same day it is thawed out.

  • Not sure I understand your question... But I freeze BM all of the time. I use Mendela freezer bags. It can last frozen for 3 months. To use, I just put the bag in a cup of warm water & it's defrosted within 5 min. I make sure to use it then within 24 hours. Hope this helps.

     Sorry, I'll try to clarify...

The instructions say something to the effect of removing air from bag before sealing the zipper and putting in freezer - I did not remove any air - is this going to affect the milk so that i should not use it?

  • I'm not sure if the air will make a big difference, I have some air in my bags too. But if you thaw the breast milk it needs to be used within 24 hrs.
