Anyone have experience with a Foley catheter?

So I'm a FTM, and already nervous about labor, since I have no idea what to expect. This is a high risk pregnancy (previous liver issues, heart arrhythmia, and GD), and if baby boy isn't here by then, they will be inducing me on Monday morning. The doc told me yesterday that because I'm still closed up tighter than Fort Knox though, he wants me to go into the hospital Sunday night to have a Foley bulb catheter inserted to try to get my cervix open before they begin pitocin on Monday.

Has anyone had a GOOD experience with a Foley? All I keep hearing is that they're ridiculously painful and even pushing was less pain than the Foley, which of course is scaring the heck out of me, since I have no idea what to expect anyway! Anybody out there who can help calm me down?

  • I personally haven't but know someone that has. Don't sweat it, it is uncomfortable according to what they say but I don't think it is really that painful considering what we have in store for us. Best of luck to you!

I had my cervix stretched a little today and it was a little stingy but didn't really cause me any scare.

  • I had one inserted after the epidural so I didn't feel a thing. Sorry, that probably doesn't help you at all. But, it didn't hurt at all when they took it out- kinda felt like taking out a tampon- I could feel it coming out but no pain.

  • I had one with my first pregnancy. Getting it put in didn't feel very good but compared to the labor I just had it wasn't bad at all. It's supposed to fall out on its own when you dilate far enough but mine didn't before I got to the hospital the next day so they just pulled it out. That didn't really hurt though. Once its out they'll break the water and start pitocin. All in all as far as inductions go it's one that doesn't involve quite as much medication.
