Bright Spot on Heart?

I had such GREAT news yesterday that after 2 girls we are finally getting our BOY:)  We also had news that they saw a bright spot on his heart and are sending us for another U/S.  Has anyone else had this happen?  I have done some reading online which I shouldn't of I know but was wondering if anyone has had this.  Everything else was perfect!

Thanks

Did they say if you had any other factors that would make them want to send you for additional testing?  Like are you older than 35?  Any other spots on other organs?

I ask because they told us that our baby has a cyst on his brain and if they had a bright spot on other organs like the heart or if I was older than 35, they would send me for genetic testing, but because it's an "isolated incident", they will just do another u/s at 26 weeks because it is supposed to go away by then.  Maybe it will be the same for your situation.

    Fingers crossed!

It's called an Echogenic Intracardiac Focus (EIF) and it is VERY common.  DD had it and we did another u/s and genetic counseling only to find out that it's only one of the many soft markers for Down's.  Just one.  And it's becoming so common due to the high tech ultrasound machines.  It really has nothing to do with the functioning of the baby's heart and if that was the only thing they found, don't worry about it.  It really means nothing.

This baby has an EIF as welll and DH and I decided not to do further testing this time.  Our DD is perfectly healthy and our doc said that this baby is as well!

Congrats on your baby BOY! :)

One of my twins had it and the MFM who told us scared the crap out of me. But I found out it's fairly common. And it was gone at the next u/s. Last week at this baby's a/s they saw one on him too.  I am not worried in the least and they won't even check it again. It's really only considered a "finding" if you are at risk for Down's. Try not to worry about it! It's basically just a calcium deposit and doesn't have any effect on how te heart functions.

Do you go to the South Shore Hospital, by any chance?  I live on the SS, too. Smile

OP, my DD also had the bright spot on her heart.  At the same time, we also found out that she had clubfeet (obviously not related), but they were saying that with both things, it could be an indicator of Down's Syndrome or some other type of chromosomal abnormality.  Of course I was freaked out, but by the next ultrasound or two, it was barely there and hard for them to even see.  We declined any further testing (other than more follow-up U/S pertaining to the clubfeet).  Anyways, she was born perfectly healthy and has no issues whatsoever.  If it is the only "soft marker", I would not worry about it at all.  GL! Smile

Congrats on the baby boy!! I was told my little guy has a bright spot on the heart this week also.  The doctor explained it is a marker for Downs but since my NT scan and blood work put me at 1/10,000 odds for Downs and there were no other markers she was not concerned.  I will go back for another u/s in 4 weeks and she said most of the time the calcification is gone.  I hope you get good news at your next u/s! Keep us posted!
