Any success with getting a cat napper to take regular naps?

DS had his 6 mos check today--I told ped about DS taking a lot of cat naps during the day and basically his days are of him being overtired/fussy. Ped suggested getting him on a two nap schedule and when he wakes at his 30/45 min mark to let him cio. Ped said it will take 7-10 days and he should learn to go back to sleep...any success stories out there??? I hate letting him cry, but at the same time, he is sooooo overtired.

  • No success here. He still takes 30 minute naps.

  • I had a cat napper too and decided that I had to CIO in order for him to get the rest he needed.

At the 30/45 minute mark, I let him cry.  The first week was awful and some days he cried for 30 minutes but he did always go back to sleep.  By the 2nd week, he only sqwuaked a bit.  Now, a month later, he almost never even wakes at that point and takes 2 hour naps.  It took work and perseverance and it was hard to hear him cry but it was for his own good.  He's now my champion napper.  Totally worth it.  Good luck!

  • We did Ferber for naps at 5 months.  It worked for getting her down and for lengthening naps.  She still takes some 30-45 min naps and those are days she is just overtired or sometimes that is all she wants to do.  I always leave her for a "crib hour" for her first 2 naps and if she is going to do a long one she doesn't wake at 30-40 mins, if it is short she'll babble/entertain herself till the hour is up so either way it is still quiet time.  We are on a 3-nap schedule but heading to 2.
  • Sleep training helped, but also putting her down on her belly.  She is a back/side sleeper at night, but naps so much better on her belly.

DD took 30-45 minute naps before we sleep trained (one of the main reasons we did sleep train).  I let her CIO when she woke at that point (along with putting herself to sleep to begin with).  It did take about 2 weeks for it to really work...before then she'd wake and fuss/cry for most of the naps and go back to sleep for maybe half of them.  Now I'd say 95% of the time she'll take at least a 1.5 hour nap.  She actually still stirs or even cries for a few minutes at 30/45 minutes, but she usually goes right back to sleep.  Every once in a while she won't go back to sleep, but since she's generally well-rested, it doesn't throw us off too bad.

Same exact thing with our LO.

Took us about 2 weeks around age of 4 mos.  It's hard but WORTH IT!
