Cracked Nipples

So I have been breastfeeding since day one. Never really had any issues.  Now my son is 7 months old and all of a sudden my nipples are so cracked and the right side hurts like hell! I'm in severe pain when he latches and even my bra being against it can hurt. Been putting cream on it, but it's been a couple of days with this and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Has this happened to anyone this far into nursing?! Any cures?? TIA

Re: Cracked Nipples

  • Maybe it's thrush?

  • I had something similar.  I was told to squeeze out a little milk onto the nip after a feeding and let it dry.  Then I applied an ointment the doc prescribed (antibiotic), in the meantime you could probably use Lanisoh.  Then she said to use disposable breast pads and not reusable ones (less moisture).

She also suggested pumping if I could, to give the nip as much of a break as possible.

I hope it heals soon for you.  It was two weeks of pure hell for me before I broke down and went to the doc suspecting thrush.  It healed pretty quickly once I started taking her advice.  I'd also suggest to double check your sons latch, that turned out to be a part of the problem in my case...he'd taken to latching too shallow and I had to fix that.

  • I paid someone to breastfeed Monroe and Moroccan so I didn't have to deal with issues like these. ew.
