In the past few days DD has started making a smacking sound with every suck, especially on my right side. It doesn't seem to be coming from her lips, but from inside her mouth. My whole nipple is in her mouth, and her latch looks great. I just have a hunch that whatever she's doing is unproductive and is letting a lot of air in. She also will suck, suck, swallow, then pop off and then slurp my nipple back into her mouth. Hard to explain, but it's like when a baby is playing with a pacifier with her tongue and pushes it in and out. My nips are pretty tough by now, but I have to keep latching her back on. She'll do it on her own, but it will often hurt.
Any thoughts?
Re: smacking sound
Sounds like what happens when they are getting too much milk, like if you have a forceful let down. Do you notice it more at the beginning of the feed than the end?
The smacking sound can be them breaking the seal to get some air in and reduce the suction, thus the amount of milk they get. This could be why she's popping off, because she's getting a lot of milk so she is finding a way to control it.
Have you tried nursing her while she is sitting up, also known as 'laid back' nursing? I had to do this with L so that gravity would slow my milk supply down. I also had to nurse him while I laid on my back and he laid on my belly.
She's developing coping mechanisms at this age, and soon she will learn how to deal with the flow and your flow may change.
I hope this helps some.
