Baby Names

Terrible to use a name and not pronounce it "properly"?

We're likely going to use the name Danica as a middle name for our daughter. We love the meaning ("morning star") and it's also a nod to my FIL and DH who have the family name Daniel.

Apparently the original Slavic pronounciation is with a soft "c" -- so "dan-ee-tsa"... all along we've been pronouncing it with a hard "c" -- "dan-ik-a".

We're not Slavic, so would it be weird to pronounce it like we were? Or should we use the anglicized pronounciation with the hard "c"?

  • I would use  the "dan-i-ka" pronunciation to avoid people getting it wrong.  It won't matter much since it is the middle but you will have to forever correct people if you use the Slavic pronunciation.

  • I'm a little unclear...which way do you want to pronounce it?

I think you should pronounce it with a hard C, cause that's what most people will expect and it will make things easier.

We prefer the hard C pronounciation since, like you say, that's what we/most people we know would gravitate to. I just don't want to be seen as butchering a pretty name unnecessarily!

  • Definitely use the hard c. It might not be the "proper" pronunciation but I don't think anyone else would know that unless you told them.

  • I'd pronounce it the way you want. My name is Aimee, a french variant of Amy. It is traditionally pronounced something like Ah-may but, outside french speaking areas most people know/say it as Amy.

  • I'd pronounce it the way you planned - with the hard 'c.'  That's the name you liked to begin with, right?  I think this pronunciation is becoming very common, so people will expect it.
  • Names are pronounced differently in different languages. In English, Danica is pronounced DAN-ih-kuh. You're doing nothing wrong.

    Lovely name, by the way.

I agree with this.  How it is pronounced in Slavic matters less when you're in America.  No one will get it right.  People in America already butcher easy names. I also think Danica is a beautiful name.

In America, maybe, OP is Canadian.

OP, I think you're fine using the English version rather than the Slavik. I think people would be fine if you chose either, it won't have been unheard of on this side of the border. Canadians are cool with original pronunciations, but don't side eye you for using the anglicized versions.

  • I've always known it to be pronounced with a hard C, so that's what I would go with.
