Traveling on plane with breast milk?

Has anyone flown and brought frozen breast milk on board? Did you carry on or check it, and how did you store it?!

I am taking a trip in May with my LO, who will be 5 months old, and need to bring 1 days worth of frozen milk; as I will be leaving my LO with my Mom for a day while I am in my friend's wedding.

Any help- TIA!!

Re: Traveling on plane with breast milk?

  • I had to make a trip w/o my LO and had to pump for three days. I froze most of the milk before the trip and put it in a small cooler. Then when I got through security I went to the ice machine and filled it with ice. Kept everything pretty much frozen until I got home. I could have had the ice in there all along but it was just lighter to carry. They didn't give me any trouble at all - was a breeze to get through security :)

  • They won't let ice packs through so do what PP said and bring empty ziploc baggies and fill them with ice throughout your trip.

  • I just brought about 20 oz of frozen milk on a plane w/me this weekend.  We were traveling to a wedding and brought DD with us, but left her w/ a baby sitter during the wedding, so I needed the milk for that.  I brought it on board with me (I was too paranoid to check it in case our luggage got lost) in a little cooler bag that came with my pump.  It had the ice pack it came with in it and TSA had no problems with that.  The milk was frozen solid when we went through security, so it just went though the xray and they gave it back to me.  If it had been melting/liquid, evidently they test it to make sure that is what it is.

  • I went through with an icepack with no problem. My milk was fresh and they had to bring it over to a special machine to test it. It took an extra 5 minutes or so.

I travel at least once a week with breastmilk, and I always take my Medela ice packs.  They will let them through as long as they are frozen.  Here is a link to my tips for traveling with BM:
