How to get out splinters? (besides tweezers)

Ugh. Ev made a break for it today while I was letting the dogs out and crawled out onto our deck (which badly needs refinishing). He made it just a few steps (crawls really) before I grabbed him, but his right knee is FULL of splinters now (and he has a couple on his hands too). Probably 15 or so. He of course will not sit still for me to get them out one at a time with tweezers, so I'm hoping someone knows a better way to get them out.

Any ideas? They don't seem to be bothering him at least, but I still feel like a piece of crap mom for letting this happen :(

  • Bath time! Pop him in a warm bath, the wood should swell and move towards the surface!  Then you should be able to get at them!  Good luck!

Thanks for the idea! I'll try it now. Hopefully it works because he will not sit still long enough for me to dig out each splinter the way they are now.

  • No problem!  I once had a thorn in my heel, and by soaking it in warm water it came out!

  • if the ends extend past the surface of the skin (not totally embedded) than you can press a piece of scotch tape gently onto them, then lift it off, and the splinters should come with. Kind of like those biore nose strips.

  • Well, bath time was a big fail. He didn't want to be in there, but even after I managed to keep him in the water for a few minutes all the water did was soften the splinters so they're breaking off at the surface when I try to remove them. Once everything dries I'll have to try tape on the ones that are still sticking out. Not sure what to do about the rest :(

  • This happened to Seamus, and we just left them be for a few days (they were superficial).  After a few days I could scrape them out.  Although, my Grandma swore by this drawing salve called Prid.  I think it may have worked, I can't remember.  It comes in a little orange container and it was like super sticky tar like salve.  HTH.
