Babies: 6 - 9 Months

2-3-4 schedule for naps and sleeping? Anyone implemented it?

I've been reading about it.  Put baby down for 1st nap after 2 hrs of being awake, down for second nap after 3 hours of being awake and to bed 4 hours after the second nap.

Our son is 7 mos and is close to this schedule.  He's more like 2hr40min awake after 1st nap-2hr50min awake after 2nd nap-3-4hrs awake until bedtime.

He's 7 months and a week old.

Does this work for anyone?  Sometimes I wonder if 4 hrs is too much time to be awake before bed.

  • We follow her lead and she has put herself into a basic 2-3-4 schedule.  But it does look more like 2-2.5, 2.5-3, 3.5-4.

    Sorry for spelling.
  • Our son is slowly starting to increase his ability to stay awake longer.  Tonight we went 4hrs from last nap til bedtime which was still early at 6:50pm, and he did pretty good.  Lots of distracting though.  Toward the end we went outside to look at birds, played on the floor with new kitchen utensils, let him play with the lid from his baby food, etc.  He really didn't fuss too much.  I think the older they get we can push them a little bit and then let them get used to staying up a bit longer.  It takes work on our part, and the increase in their awake time is pretty gradual, but we have to help them along a bit I think.

I was always (and still am), scared of the overtired baby.  I got lots of great help on babywhispererforums.com  Great site!

  • I had never heard of this but DD basically set herself up on this schedule a few weeks ago. With me her schedule is more like 3-3-4, though. My mom and FIL watch her during the week and I think it's more 2-2-4 for them. She'd rather stay up and play with me.

My pedi recommended she be awake from 3-8pm! I couldn't do it. She needs to sleep after about 4 hours. But I've found 4 hours is usually good and gives us a nearly full night of sleep (depending on how long her naps were).

  • Oy. DS works well on a 2-2-2-2.5 schedule. That's 3 naps a day.

He's not ready for those kinds of awake times yet.

  • I follow his lead but were pretty close to that. He still benefits from a shorter half hour nap in the evening before going down around 7 or 8.

  • We are close to this schedule.

    Nap #1 - 1.5 hours after waking

    Nap #2 - 2.5 hours after waking

Bed - 3.5 hours after waking

She put herself on this schedule and works well for us.
