Breastfeeding

Chronic low supply and storage

Baby and I have made it to 3.5 months! Hurray. My supply seems stable but continues to be low. I accept that this will be the case for the remainder of our breastfeeding relationship. My first goal is for us to make it until 6 months but I do worry that one day before then there may be no milk at all.

I am thinking about attempting to pump and freeze for post 6months (for use with solids or as a treat) but each pumping session yields <1 ounce. I'm wondering if it is ok to pump/cool/bag a days worth of milk at a time. Or if milk put into freezer bags needs to be collected during one pumping session.

  • This is a good resource:

    https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage/

Under the chart, it says, "Milk from different pumping sessions/days may be combined in one container ? use the date of the first milk expressed. "

  • Are you home with baby or do you have to work? As long as you can nurse directly, your milk won't disappear. If you do have to be away and you respond poorly to the pump, that's harder, but nursing part time should still keep the milk flowing.

I don't really think it's worth stressing over trying to pump for "someday" if it's making today hard. I haven't used any breastmilk in solids, but we didn't do cereal. Most cereals can just be mixed with water anyway, if you do choose to use them.

It's fine to mix milk at the same temp - just cool, then mix.

  • I would use the milk now.  It doesn't make sense to give him more formula now so that you can freeze for later.
