How long does 4 month old nurse?

My LO is 4 months old and lately she is distracted during nursing sessions and doesn't nurse very long.  She's on for about 10 minutes and sometimes 15, on both sides.  She seems to have a preference for the right side, but I try to nurse on both sides since she doesn't stay on long. Is this common? I've always been concerned about low supply so I'm worrying that my supply isn't keeping up with her (even though her weight gain is on target and she has plenty of wet diapers).

Re: How long does 4 month old nurse?

  • That was pretty normal when DD was that old - she just got a lot more efficient with nursing. Have you tried looking on kellymom for the article on a distracted nurser? There might be some tips on there that work for you.

  • Very typical to go through a very distracted eater at 4 months. Agree w/ PP  - check out Kellymom.com.

You should notice that at night, when it's quiet and dark, she is more focused as there is less to catch her attention. My 5 month old can be done in as quick as 10 minutes and sometimes she takes her sweet time (usually when she is tired and doing a combo of nursing and comfot sucking.)

  • Thanks for the replies.  The KellyMom article helps!
