dark green specs in poop xp

LO is 3 weeks old and EBF. His poops have always been mustard yellow until tonight. I just changed him and it looked like his regular yellow poop but with dark green specs in it. Almost like someone sprinkled parsley flakes in his poop. Is this normal?? Anyone else's LO have this? Im so paranoid that he has a dairy sensitivity or foremilk imbalance...

  • I got the link below from kellymom.com. Green in the stools occasionally is okay.

    GREEN STOOLS

The occasional green stool is not unusual in the breastfed baby. Consistently green stools, however, are not normal for the breastfed baby. Most doctors don't seem to recognize this as a potential problem because they often define "normal stool" as that of the formula-fed infant. Baby's stool can be a wide variety of colors and textures , and not all of these are cause for concern. It is helpful to know what is normal for the bf baby as well.

Consistently green stools in the breastfed baby can indicate:

an imbalance of foremilk/hindmilk, often resulting in frothy green stools. a sensitivity to something in the mother's diet, such as cow's milk products.a sign that baby has an illness. Babies with an intestinal virus or even a simple cold will sometimes have green, mucusy stools. Teething can also bring about green stools due to increased saliva (can also cause tummy upset) a lot of green vegetables or something with green food coloring in mom's diet. If baby has started solids, that could also account for the change in color (this is normal with the change in diet).

  • I would try first with the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.  Especially if you feed on both boobs during one feeding (not letting nay one boob get empty).

I think if it was a sensitivity to something in your diet, then LO would be in some pain/discomfort as well.

  • I would wait and see what the next few poops look like before making any changes. With my daughter, at around a month old, her poop turned consistently green and had occasional blood streaks in it. I tried the foremilk/hindmilk without any luck. Then I cut out ALL dairy from my diet. Even hidden dairy. It was really difficult but her poop went back to normal BF poop within a couple of weeks. I reintroduced dairy to my diet around five months and she was fine. Her digestive system just needed a little more time to mature.

  • For DD#1 it was a dairy allergy that she still has. With this one it is getting better with block feeding and limiting, without entirely eliminating, dairy. DD #1 wasn't in pain until 6 weeks. Also if you had any scabs on your nipples they will end up in the poop but the chunks are larger, the peppery specs are likely blood. Your pedi can confirm for you if take a poopy diaper in. Put it in the fridge to keep it "fresh". Your pedi may recommend FFing which is usually not needed, unless it is your preference.

  • DD's poop was green from about 2-3 weeks on and stayed that way. I drove myself nuts trying to figure out what was causing it and finally gave up and decided to trust the pedi that it was normal as long as there was no mucous or blood.
