Speaking of Aiden & Its Derivitives

Full disclosure: DS2's name is Reid Jayden. DH and I settled on Jayden after Reid was born following a million failed attempts to agree on a middle name. DH insisted on a "J" name, so we could potentially nickname him RJ. My first choices were Jonah, Judah and Jerrett, but DH vetoed them. It was ultimately decided that Jayden flowed nicely with Reid and it was a nice homage to my grandpa, J. Dennis. I was really happy with our choice... until reading so many negative remarks about "den" names on BNB. Now I'm kind of bummed about it. Am I overreacting? DH thinks I have too much time on my hands to worry about this, lol.

Re: Speaking of Aiden & Its Derivitives

  • Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. I have a DD named Hayden, I also did not do my name research here so had no idea the "den" names were so unliked by some. I have never met anyone IRL that had anything neg. to say about her name. It fits her, she has a nice nn (Haddie) to fall back on...I am not sweating it too much.

  • I think you should stand by your choice. Don't let strangers opinions from the Internet affect your choice. If we all like the same names we would have seven billion people named charles.

  • Oh gosh, don't let the comments bother you. The "den" craze just got out of hand, there's MILLIONS OF THEM. It doesn't mean that the names themselves are inherently bad. And you NEVER see them in the MN spot, that's actually very refreshing.

  • I wouldn't worry about it since it's in the middle name spot. I love Reid by the way, and even though Jayden is NMS, Reid Jayden definitely flows nicely.

  • I do not dislike the -ayden names. It's the popularity that annoys me. Aiden is the one that I find the most fault with, b/c it is just SO popular. I think many of the ladies on here would agree. It's not that the name is bad. It's just that it has become so common, and many odd letters are being added to just make names up. Like Zayden or Kayden. AND it's your LO's middle name, so I find it no big deal at all!

  • Eh, it's the internet. I think you're overreacting a little.

Your son has a perfectly fine name. You liked it, you both agreed on it, and there's no reason to fret over it now. BNB is just one group of people. If it helps at all, a good portion of the board dislikes Piper, and I got a pretty lukewarm reception when I asked about Monica. So what? We like it. And her name is perfect for her.

You can't expect everyone, or even most people, to like the same things you do. As long as you're happy with your child's name and it's nothing horrendous (which, by the way, your son's name is FAR from horrendous), don't worry about it.

  • These are just opinions. Many people on here HATE Kinsley with a passion. I find it humorous because everybody IRL thinks it's adorable and a great name (besides MIL, which is a given she won't like anything). It's an opinion, it gives me humor. I don't thin you should worry about a name you named your child two years ago!

  • Thanks, ladies. I feel better now. Reid Jayden happens to be the cutest little thing, so that alone should convince me to stop taking internet comments too seriously ;)

  • While I also can't stand the Aiden/Braden, etc names as well as Jackson/Jaxon etc.... what I think of these names has nothing to do with what you named your child. As long as you love the name, don't second guess yourself and let someone's unimportant opinion bother you.

FWIW, I have a nephew named Jack and another one named Aiden. Tongue Tied

  • I like Aiden.

    I don't like it's derivatives.

    BUT...

Middle names are another story.  While Jayden is NMS,  it fits in the mn position nicely and I like that it pays homage to his grandfather.

In the end, it's your child and strangers on the Internet just don't matter.

    LOL.  Wow that's a coincidence!!

Seriously though, don't take it personal at all. I may not be a fan in general of my nephew's names, but I'm definitely a huge fan of them.

ETA: DS1 is a Reid too.

No worries, it just made me chuckle. Jackson and Reid are very much my name style; Jayden was more of a wild card, which is why I was questioning it. Good luck with LO2!

  • Don't worry about it.  He will never question it and will grow up with a bunch of buddies named Jayden/Hayden/Caden, etc.  They will be very normal names to him.  They might seem trendy to us, but our kids will think they are very average names.

Besides, your son's fn (Reid) is awesome- IMO (I have a Reed).

  • Don't worry about it! YOu and H chose a name you love - who cares what others say? Plus it is in the MN spot and Reid is a great name!! Don't waste your time regretting a name you were initially happy with.
  • Well, it's in the MN spot so I wouldn't worry about it! Plus it has meaning to you, which can really be a game changer when choosing a name. I also agree with pp's that the combo Reid Jayden is actually refreshing and uncommon.
