Clogged milk duct

Ouch! We were traveling yesterday and I didn't get to pump until later that I normally do. I usually pump once a day around 4 or 5 and I didn't get to until around 11. Now my right breast is very tender and sore on the inside (from my cleavage to the nipple pretty much. I have taken IB profen and started him on that side at each feeling. I also took a hot shower and massaged from the cleavage to the nipple.  In going to try some other positions at his next feeding, but what other suggestions do you ladies have? Should I pump extra after every feeding until it goes away? I have an oversupply already, so I dont know if that's a good idea. I am scared of mastitis!

TIA

  • Don't be scared of mastitis, having a clogged duct does not guarantee mastitis.  Just nurse or pump more regularly.  My longest-lasting clogged duct was 5 days and I never got mastitis.  I realize I am just one person and everyone is different....  Just massage a lot.  Once the clog works its way to the nipple, you might be able to see the white pin-dot.  Squeeze there and it should release (like a zit, gross).  I just had one this morning, coincidentally.  One duct clogs a lot.  I know where to focus the pressure now though and I can get them out in no time at all now.

  • I JUST got rid of one, it took 5 days also, here it what I did:  Before a feeding I would take a diaper and fill it with hot water and warm the area, then I would feed on that side first.  You kind of have to anticipate the feeding because I like to have the heat on there for 15 minutes.  After I feed, while I am feeding on the other side, I ice the side with clogged duct.  Also, I started taking Soy Lecithin, someone in my breastfeeding support group recommended it.  It also seems to help!  Keep at it.   Also, take an electric toothbrush while in the shower and use it to massage the area, sounds crazy, but it works!

Wow thanks for the tips!  I hope I can get rid of it sooner rather than later!
