Spitting up

Baby is 3 days old and has been spitting up, its getting worse as my supply increases. Should I be worried? Should I limit her time on my breast? Don't know what to do.

Re: Spitting up

  • If she's not crying, screaming, or arching and is having good diaper output/gaining well I wouldn't be concerned. DD spit up rivers after every feed, she was a fountain, the first 6 months, a classic happy spitter. It can be totally normal and nothing to worry about if she's not in pain.

This.  I had the same worries you do when DS was born.  I was thinking, "This can't possibly be normal!  This is way too much spit up!  That must have been his whole meal!" It looks like a lot more milk than it really is.  Like Wildcat said, if your daughter isn't crying or screaming when she spits, and has good diaper output/gaining weight well, then she's a "happy spitter" and there's nothing to worry about.  Some babies just spit up more than others.  DS still spits up a bunch roughly every 3rd feeding.  I know it's hard not to worry, but don't worry Wink

All of this.  We have a 3 1/2 month old "happy spitter," and it's more of a laundry issue than anything else.  Invest in bibs, pack extra clothes for LO, and maybe a shirt for yourself, and a ton of burp rags.  We use receiving blankets or cloth diapers.  Please do not limit time at the breast.  That's bad for your supply.  It's better that LO is overfed and spits up than underfed to avoid the mess.
