Baby Names

Team Green - needs help!

We struggled with DD's name so the fact that we are struggling for Baby #2 is no surprise.  Our DD's name is Teagan Noelle (which we both love, so in the end it worked out) but even though we still have plenty of time, I am stressing that I can't find anything that I love.

My dad passed away a little over a year ago so we would like the baby's middle name to be James in his honor.  (Dad was Walter James)  I would potentially like to use it for a girl's middle name too if it is paired with a first name that isn't 'too masculine.'

Any suggestions/thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Girl names that I like:

- Finley (James)

- Cora (James)

- Elise (James)

Boy names that I like:

- Colton James - was in love with this name but seems to be fading

- Rowan James

- Callan James - DH ruled out

  • I think if you want to use James for a girl then go for it. Just be sure its paired with a feminine name. Cora or Elisa are very feminine.

I am not a big fan of the name Colton but like it better than Callan. Rowan is cute too. GL

  • I like your girl names, but Finley sounds kind of masculine to me.  As for the boy names, I really like Callan, too bad your DH threw it out.  I also feel like Rowan sounds feminine, but I can't put my finger on why.

No offense taken.  I honestly thought about this a lot.  I did not say I was 100% sure we would use James as a middle name for a girl.  Just throwing around some ideas.

IMHO, I think my DD would feel honored more than be embarrased by her middle name knowing the background.  If my mn was James and my parent's told me where it came from, it would so meaningful to me.  My dad was the world to me and would have been to my kids as well.

Next, how often do people even know someone's middle name?  We never call our DD by her first and middle name.

Maybe I am just being bias because it was my dad and I want to honor him so it is good to hear other opinions.  Thank you.

  • James as a MN is fine IMO, love that it is honoring your father, I do agree with a PP that you can't (or shouldn't) use Finley with it though. I also like Callan best of your options. My favorite boy names are Ian, Eric, Caius, Cian and Lucian, not sure if they are your style.

  • I like Cora James and Rowan James.

There is another poster on this board named Cloudnine(climber) that is naming her DD Cora!

  • I agree with pps that Finley is a masculine name for a girl, especially to be paired with James.  Cora or Elise are wonderful.

Your boy names are NMS.  I'd go with James as a first name.

I went to grade school with a girl whose middle name was Stanley after her deceased grandfather.  She was mortified by it and always tried to hide it from the rest of the class.  I think it was more because Stanley isn't the prettiest name than the fact it is a boy's name.  I think James is a really loving tribute to your dad and works with a feminine first name for a girl.

  • I think Cora James and Elise James sound great! I think it's fine to use James as a mn for your girls. Out of your boys names, I'm not real wild about how they sound with James, if I had to pick I'd choose Colton James. It sounds the best

  • I think that James is a perfectly fine MN for a girl, but if you're concerned about it sounding masculine I would DEFINITELY not use it with Finley. That screams boy. I actually KNOW a Finley James.

  • I really love the name Elise. It will my our baby's middle name if we have a girl, but it is after someone who is like a sister to me. However, I don't personally like the way it sounds with James, I think Cora James is the best option for a girl. Finley can be cute, but it can also be masculine, so if you are going for James as a MN, I would def use a very feminine FN. For a boy I really like Callan James, but too bad your DH ruled it out. Out of the other two, I'd pick Colton James.

I agree. After all, James is also a last name, and people use maiden names as middles all the time. I like Cora best for a girl. I don't like Colton, but I think Callan and Rowan are both fine.

  • James works as a mn for Cora and Elise, but not so much for Finley. On paper, I would think Finley James were a boy. FTR, I love Cora. Beautiful! I don't love any of your boy names, but Rowan is okay for me.

  • Cora and Elise are both very pretty.  Finley is nms.

I don't love any of the boy names.  They all seem soft to me for some reason.  I have a niece named Teagan.  Her brother is Leo and I LOVE his name.  I think Leo James would sound terrific.

  • I would wait for your baby boy to come along to honor your father (sorry for your loss, by the way)...I love the name Elise if it is a girl.I like all of your boy names actually...Callan is my favorite.
  • I understand wanting to honor your dad, but I think you can do so just as well with Jamie if it's a girl. Finley James sounds completely boy. I guess Elise is the best but I still don't think I could get on board with it. I like Colton James for a boy.
