Breastfeeding

supply is tanking...

My supply is absolutly tanking.  I had a bad pumping day when I was out of town one day, I was just recovering from that and DD decided to sleep a ridiculous amount one night. (she slept 9p-10am) I pumped once in the morning when I woke, just to relieve, not to drain, since I figured she would be getting up soon.  Ever since that day my supply has been terrible!!

What have you done that works, to boost your supply after having a strong supply and it dropping?  I've tried a lot but I know there has to be something I can do to get it back up.

FYI: I nurse first thing in the morning, pump 3-4 times at work and nurse in the evening, and overnight if she wakes up.

Re: supply is tanking...

  • my supply has drastically changed in past mth because i have started nursing more vs pumping. i have realized that i have to pump b4 bed and when i wake up and nurse him n middle of night in order to keep milk coming.

  • I've been dealing with something simliar, I think because DD is eating less due to teething and also just distraction.  I have had to add a pump session at work and also before bed at night to get it back to where it used to be.  I've also been working on drinking more water, because I am terrible about that.
  • At this point your supply is probably just leveling out.  You probably won't get a super full feeling.  I don't think one night should impact your supply that much.

If you are worried about it... I would add a feeding. My LO still has six or seven feedings a day.  On a work day, my LO nurses at 5 am, goes back to sleep and nurses again at 6:30 then eats his food, bottle at 10, 1 and food, nurses at 4 and 6:30.  He does to bed at 7:30 and I wake him to eat when I go to bed at 10ish (this is to keep up my supply and get some sleep).  You could also see if you can keep your little one feeding for a longer time to create another let down.  If you block feed you could try offering both breasts... this increases supply.

I also notice it seems like I have less milk when I am tired or not feeling good.  I drink this Mothers Milk tea and it really seems to give me a boost.  I get it from Whole Foods.

    Good Luck!!
