Thoughts on Mari?

I really like this pronounced Mar(rhymes with car)-ee.  I don't want it as nickname, just as the full name.  I am a little concerned that she would be called Mary.  But I have had to explain my dd's name enough that I am used to doing so.

I think mn would be Lee (my mn  name and my mom's mn).  My fn kind of rhymes with Mari but it's not like either of us would be going around using both our first and middle names so that doesn't bother me too much.

Thoughts?

Re: Thoughts on Mari?

  • I know a very cute little girl named Marianna that goes by "Mari" so to me it's a nickname. Mari Lee also kind of sounds like "Marley" or "Marilee" - one name... but I've never believed that a nn has to have perfect flow with a fn especially if it has family significance!
  • I love the name Mari!  I know a girl who is 27 named Mari Amanda.

  • The Maris I've known we're Japanese.
  • The only Mari I know is Indian and I wasn't sure how to pronounce it at first. I think that it's pretty though, just not crazy of it with Lee. I'd go with a longer middle name that doesn't end in "ee," like Elizabeth, Olivia or Rebecca.

  • I like the name mari an I didnt think to pronounce it Mary. I don't know any one by that name

  • I prefer the Gaelic spelling Mairi. Around here, that wouldn't get mispronounced (it would be MARR-ee). Mari might.

  • My niece's name is Mariana nn Mari, and I love it. Not sure how I feel about Mari Lee though, I agree w/ pp who said it sounded like one word when said together.

  • My good friend has a daughter named Mari, I think it's a really nice name! I've never been confused with the pronunciation at all. I don't look at it and see "Mary."

  • My friend growing up was named Mari and people didn't ever call her Mary. I like it but not with middle name Lee

  • I have a friend with that name but it's spelled Mauri.  I think adding the "u" really helps with pronunciation.
