Those who also BF - when do you pump?

I am ready (finally!) to start pumping. But when do you recommend doing this? I have had issues with oversupply, now regulated I think, but I don't want to go through that again. I generally feed on one side only at a time, but logistically I have no idea how I would pump one side and feed her at the same time. I use a nursing pillow and don't understand where the pump parts would go! And unfortunately right now DD really only naps in the Moby, so naptime is mostly out. Any ideas?

  • I only pump once per day after the first morning feed on the side LO did not take.

When I was home and just pumping to build a stash, I would pump once a day right after the first feeding for 20minutes.  Now, I'm back to work and pump 4 times a day.

Sounds like that might do the trick (and I am also going back to work). What did you do with LO while you pumped? DD unfortunately isn't hot on sitting by herself yet, plus she's got reflux so I have to keep her upright! I guess maybe I could put my legs up and prop her up on my thighs...

  • This is the problem I had pumping in the morning. It is DS's most alert time, and he does not want to be left alone. He's about the same age as your LO, but I haven't been able to get a pumping schedule going. Sorry that's not helpful, but I am interested to see what other moms say!

  • To build my stash I pump in the middle of the night.  DS wakes up between 3 and 4, I feed him on one side and then put him back to bed, then I pump for about 15 minutes on the other side and have a little snack myself.

  • I also have a baby that likes to be held a lot. I got a hands free Pumping bra and I sit on the edge of the couch and pump while I hold dd or bounce her in the bouncy seat. I can't hold her close to my chest but she's generally happy with touching me.

  • You've gotten great advice.  I wanted to comment on the wanting-to-be-near-you part.  My LO fussed whenever we put her down.  We talked to the pedi, who said "Turn off your AC!"  Turns out, LO was cold!  We layered her up and she's perfectly content.  Tonight she's wearing a long sleeved onesie, fleece footy PJs, and a fleece sleep sack.  We also keep our heat on 68-70.  Just an idea!  :-)
