help I htink I may have mastitis

So my little girl just turned 8 months but  I  just started feeling sick yesterday. It started with my left tata starting to hurt no horrible pain though then a headache, chills, joint pain, a fever of 101 on and off then I started feeding her it hurt more but no redness on my tata. So after I took a 2 hour nap I felt better my appetite was back and I thought it was just a bug but then my symptoms  came back like 2 hours later. This morning my left tata has some redness and kinda hurts when I brush up against it.Should I call the dr or should I give it another 24 hrs  any suggestions ? thanks so much

  • I've had it 3 times. Take 2 Advil, put a hot water bottle on the sore area and massage it before every feed or pump. Take vitamin C, drink a ton of water. Get someone to watch your baby and sleep as much as you can. My partner stayed home to watch our twins and apart from feeding, I slept for the entire day. This saved me for sure because I wouldn't have been able to function for the day and take care of two babies.

If you've had the fever for more than 12 hours, you will probably need an antibiotic so I would call the doctor as well.

  • I had mastitis twice - the first I thought I was just extra tired but the 2nd time...it was full blown mastitis where I was down for the count for about 4 days.   I couldn't move - my mom had to take 4 days off of work (I was visiting while my husband travelled) just to take care of me.  Gotta love moms :)

I had the symptoms before I had any breast pain - severe nauseous, vomitting, high fever, aches, pains, no appetite, diaherra, etc - thought it was the flu. Then maybe a day later my breast showed the signs - pain, red streaks, etc.

Massage it, heating pad, nurse from that side only and pump the other side if you can manage it.  It felt like shards of glass, but it is a great way to get the infection out.   I took super hot showers and let the water hit my chest for 30-40 minutes.  I took motrin to help with the inflammation.

Pedialyte.  Saved my life during mastitis.  I couldn't keep anything down, including water, but that stuff was awesome.  I drank a ton of it and now I am addicted to it LOL.

I went against everyone's advice and did not go on antibiotics.  I am too afraid of a yeast infection - and didn't want it to transfer and cause thrush.  I have no idea if the two are related or even if that can happen - but all I know is yeast is yeast and I did'nt want thrush to add to the mixture.

    Feel better!
