1st Trimester

5 weeks pregnant and lost 4 pounds - is this normal?

I'm exactly 5 weeks pregnant and weighed myself today. I'm overweight as is and prior to knowing I was pregnant wanted to lose weight. As soon as I found out I changed my eating habits immediately to eat healthier. I also gave up coffee, soda, and all junk food. I'm eating healthier and cutting back calories compared to my unhealthy days. I'm eating around 1500 calories. Usually I would be psyched about a weight loss but now that I'm pregnant not sure if this is normal or even healthy. Anyone knows? Tia

  • I have read that it is not unusual to lose a few pounds during the very early stages of pregnancy.

I started off overweight (size 14/16) and lost 14 lbs between my first appointment and this last appointment.  My OB told me that weight loss is normal in your first trimester, but she wanted to make sure I was not actively dieting (which I'm not).

Wow that's amazing, that's exactly where I am right now too. This makes me feel better. Now I won't freak out if I continue losing during first trimester. I will not go on a diet to lose weight, but I will continue eating healthier.

Early as in first part of trimester?

  • I lost about 5 lbs in 4 weeks.. but I hated food, and was also more conscious of what I ate... less fried and greasy foods, and more veggies and healthier choices to bring in better nutrients. A lot of my friends say this was normal, and not to worry, you make up for it by the second half of your pregnancy!

  • I am 10 weeks and have lost 11 pounds. Mine has been from severe morning sickness (aka all day sickness). I also have a surplus so it wont kill me to lose weight and my doc didnt seem concerned.

  • I'm 5 weeks. I'm overweight and have been dieting before but I'm definitely watching what I eat now its just that nothing sounds good and the thought of eating makes me want to vomit. As long as you're getting the right amount of calories I don't think its a problem.
