Moms who work-Clothing Question

Hey ladies,

I'm going back to work in a few weeks and am looking for some new post-pregnancy clothes that would be convenient for pumping at work.  What kinds of shirts/tops do you suggest to make things as easy as possible?  I'm thinking button down or wrap style shirts would be best?  Do you have any recommended stores or brands?  My workplace is pretty casual, so I have lots of flexibility as far as clothing goes.

Thanks in advance!

  • When I was pumping for DD, I just wore regular shirts. Usually pullover shirts. I wore a nursing cover over the top so it didn't matter too much and I found pullover shirts easy to pull up and pump.

  • For me, shirts have to be thick enough that my nursing pads don't show through (i.e. doesn't look like I have stuffed my bra). But anything I can easily pull up or criss cross front with tanks underneath work well too.  No really nice fabrics (silk, etc.) that are easily stained/spotted as I find that I will get a drop or two in my clothes sometimes when I am disconnecting from the pump. Cardigans with tank tops underneath tend to be the frontrunners for me.

  • Ditto pp I just wear regular shirts & pull up. I do wear nursing bras though, that makes it easier. Flip the flaps down, put on my hands free pumping bra & pump.

  • I never wore dresses that zipped up the back because you basically have to get naked to pump in one of those.  Other than that, anything is good.

  • If you google nursing tops you can find several retailers who sell relatively cute tops that have easy-access openings. I think motherwear.com is one of them, and destination maternity.

  • I use regular shirts and wear nursing bras. I actually find button down annoying cause I'd have to unbutton the whole thing anyway to get my hands free pumping bra on.

  • Pumping around others (like when visitors are here) I just use a nursing cover.  I don't like nursing tops-- too much work.  So I just wear whatever and pull them up.
