I hate it. I live in NYC, and all I can think of is people yelling "Hey, Coopa!" Not cute.

My personal take: I've known way too many dogs named Cooper to consider it for a human. Same thing for Bailey, Maya, and a host of other names. That's the downside of having worked in a veterinary practice for two years.

I have a dog named Cooper (he came with the name, so it has grown on me...for a dog anyway). My aunt also used to have a cat named Cooper. I think it's fine for a pet, but I don't like it for a human.
Personally, I think it's really sweet, and I love the nickname Coop.
I don't think it's at all popular where I live. It's not on the top 100 names in my country (it only goes up to 100 though so I don't know about in the top 1000) but I've never met anyone with that name.
As far as people commenting it's a "pet name", my name is Abby and I actually know more pets than people named Abby. It's a huge trend right now for people to name their pets with human names.
If you don't live where I live, it doesn't really matter if it's popular where I live. I looked it up on ssa.gov, and it was ranked 76 in 2010, and has been steadily growing in popularity for the last 30 years.
I like the way the name sounds (I have a weakness for -er names), but I have heard of too many dogs named Cooper for it to feel like a human name. Then again, I love Sadie and apparently that's a commonly used dog name too. So I think if I were to meet a baby named Cooper, it would cancel the dog association and I could grow to like it more and more.
Good luck!

I like it, its an actual name and don't fall into the overly popular Aidan, Brayden, Hayden. Plus, a nickname like Coop or Coops sounds cool.
We were thinking of Rory for our son and a very close friend said, oh that is a dogs name. I love that name but can't get that annoying comment out of my head. Cooper and Rory don't remind me of pet names... Cujo, Spot & Rover maybe, yes. but not Cooper or Rory.
I absolutely love this name. The only reason I didn't name my son this was because a family member of mine said that kids would call him pooper. Totally bummed me out. I still love the name and my next son I'm naming Cooper. It's not terribly popular where I live, maybe that's why I like it.
Re: Cooper??
No, there aren't many barrel makers in my area at all.
